Surgery postponed, doctor called in sick

Recommended Posts

Good morning everyone,

Here I sit back at my desk at work. My surgery was scheduled for yesterday at 7:00am. I was in pre-op, in my gown, had my blood sugar taken, paperwork all finished an in place, 2 minutes away from the IV when in comes the charge nurse to tell me my surgeon called in sick. I was in shock. I understand that doctors are human and get sick but I was taken aback by the response from the hospital. I would have thought that there would have been contingencies in place but nope, sorry Deb, can you come back on Saturday? I made a lot of phone calls yesterday to get insurance, work, etc., straightened out. I've also lost some confidence in the nurse that is supposed to be assigned to me. I called her and she was actually surprised to hear about my surgery being rescheduled and basically was no help. Bad day yesterday. I'm rescheduled for Saturday. Keep your fingers crossed for me everyone.

Deb, First, big :):(:) hugs to you! What happened to you is no better than the bride who is all dressed up only to find the groom isn't coming! That sucks, big time!

Now that I'm all fired up, who do you want me to go out and kill?:)

Seriously though, there are no accidents in the universe and Saturday must be meant to be your day. We'll all be rooting for you and hoping for an easy surgery and splendidly uneventful recovery.

Let us know how you did as soon as you can.

Jo Ann

Since I work in health care, My thoughts are thank God your surgeon had sense enough to call in sick. Just think if he/she got the dry heaves and slipped with the scapel in hand. A saturday surgery is going to be expensive for him-- saturday time in the operating room for a non emergency case. This place is really trying to be accomadating.

As a fellow bandster, damm! you are both physically and phsycologically ready at this point, took the time off work well,it sucks. Have positive thoughts about your surgeon and the people who are working on Saturday!!! Good Luck!

Thanks so much for that response. It is difficult right now but I'm hanging in there. I'm happy the my surgeon decided to stay home when he is ill and not expose me and others to what ever he had. I'm feeling better now. I feel kind of stuck but have put the time to use with doing some Christmas shopping. Thanks again for the reply. This website has been a Godsend for me. :)

I just found the website this week... I was banded in June.. down 50 lbs. Best thing I ever did. I think the hardest part was the pre op diet. How much time are you taking off? I had surgery on a Thursday and was back at work Monday. I had told no one at work and no one noticed. I really liked that I could do this as an outpatient. I choose tylenol grape chewables for pain management and for Friday Sat Sunday I took that every four hours while awake. I was much better by Monday. One does have gas pain that walking and moving around helped alot with. Just lying around makes gas pain worse.:)

Only 2 more days. You can do it.

This is Deb,

I'm back at work and doing fine. I get very tired (expected), and I'm having trouble with some back pain but doing great. I've lost 25 lbs. since November 27th and am very excited. The folks at work were very surprised by the weight loss as was I. I told everyone not to expect to see any difference, I surprised us all. I hope everyone is doing well and Happy New Year!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
