chubbsey1 126 Posted April 22, 2013 Hello all. wondering if anyone takes plavix for heart stents and if so did your Doc prescribe stomach meds such as zantac after your surgery along with the plavix? Thanks i'm very confused pre-op debating between rny and sleeve.
Recycled 2,182 Posted April 22, 2013 I've been on Plavix for almost 5 years. I'm pre-op sleeve and I get quite a bit of heartburn and acid reflux now and doc told me to take Pepcid AC. While the cardi doc was not thrilled with my choice for WLS, she is on board so long as it helps me get to a healthy weight. Both cardiac and sleeve surgeon says Plavix for both the surgery and post-op will not be an issue.
chubbsey1 126 Posted April 22, 2013 Cool thanks. Good luck to you so the plavix and pepcid combo is probably for life then?
Recycled 2,182 Posted April 22, 2013 Not necessarily. Plavix is usually given when a DES stent is used. (drug eluting stent) If a cath or cat scan can confirm the stent is covered and no metal is still exposed, then possibly the Pavix can be discontinued. I just see it as a safety net anyway, so yeah......probably for life.
chubbsey1 126 Posted April 22, 2013 Thanks recycled I appreciate it. If I can ask your opinion should I lean towards rny or the sleeve?
Recycled 2,182 Posted April 23, 2013 Thanks recycled I appreciate it. If I can ask your opinion should I lean towards rny or the sleeve? Well, my opinion would be somewhat slighted in favor of the sleeve due to my own personal choice based on my needs. You need to review the differences of the two and what your individual goals and expectations are, along with the lifestyle adjustments each will require after surgery. Typically, if you have a great deal of weight (very high BMI) to lose, you might expect greater losses, faster with the RNY. However it will also require greater lifestyle changes and adjustments post op. Talk it over with your surgeon and see what he suggests for you, then decide for yourself what is best. Good luck
Sherri297 81 Posted April 23, 2013 I was on Plavix after 2 seperate heart stents, and needed my gallbladder out (granted I was not in severe pain) but my cardiologist wouldn't clear me for the surgery because of the Plavix and the risk of heavy bleeding. The cardiologist did take me off of it after a year of treatment. Had my sleeve 6 months ago (and gallbladder removed). Down 90 lbs from my heaviest weight, off all diabetic meds, and feeling great. chubbsey1 126 Posted April 23, 2013 Recycled thanks again for your sound advice. Sherri congrats on feeling 90 lbs lighter that gives me a ray of hope that your cardiologist took you off the plavix, One of many reasons for this surgery for me was to get off most of the meds I am on I dont mind Vitamins but the surgeon said I would be on plavix and a med to prevent ulcers. Recycled 2,182 Posted April 23, 2013 the surgeon said I would be on plavix and a med to prevent ulcers. Be sure to check with your cardiologist, as your sleeve surgeon will want you to stop taking the Plavix (and most other meds too) about 5 days before the sleeve. In my case, with any surgery I stop 3 days prior and resume 1 day after.
