To Weigh or Not To Weigh?

Recommended Posts

That for me this week is indeed the question. I am 10 weeks post op and last week started a workout regimen. I am doing Jillian Michaels 30 day shred routine and mixing in a few other things to keep it interesting. I did level 1 four days last week, did an Ab routine followed by some core strength training and cardio for a fifth day of exercise. Soooo, this morning was my weigh in and much to my surprise I'd gained 0.7lbs. Now I know to expect a little something when starting to exercise but I was expecting less of a loss, not a gain.

My short term goal is to lose at least 4lbs per week for the next two months, I was already averaging 2.7-3lbs without any vigorous exercise. So what do I do, weigh or not weigh. I'm worried about tracking my goal if I don't, and even more driving myself crazy over every fluctuation if I do!

Help! At a cross roads and in desperate need of advice.

I am 13 months out and down 125lbs. Stalls and small gains happen often. I still weigh myself each week, I have noticed that when I stall my body is readjusting and I will drop a clothes size. And then have a sigificant loss after 2 or 3 weeks. Don't get discouraged the weight will come off.

You'll hear strong opinions both ways. I think it's what works for you. I am a daily weigher, all the way. I want to know what happening, so that if I am not losing, I'm not disappointed after a week of thinking I probably lost 2 or 3 pounds, only to discover I gained .2! To me, that's far worse than knowing I'm stuck. I've read things that weighing daily is a habit of successfully thin people. I also know people who never weigh except at the dr and are successful, and some who weigh weekly. Do what works for you.

I can't tell when your surgery was. But for me, the first 6 months after this surgery I weighed once a month. I knew I was eating according to the guidelines and I was excersing as much as I could. I can get negatively affected if the scale is not going down, even makes me want to eat from discouragement so I just used clothes to know I was shrinking. I am now starting month 9. Since my portions are increasing and I am no longer "perfect" on my food plan I weight about every other day, mayde longer if I am really on track. I have never had the frustration of a stall, one time I weighed in at 3 weeks and I had lost nothing at all, a week later I had lost 10 lbs. IT IS CRAZY, I exercise a lot, so with this surgery if I follow the guidelines it just happens, I lose 10+ lbs every month so far.

As you can see, we all do it differently, oh & recently I started on the forum where we all post our weight loss every Saturday, now I am looking for some accountability. I think it is called something like Saturday weigh in, pm me if you can't find it and want to join in. Good luck

I always weigh in once a week at least, usually twice. I know its hard but you need to understand now that not every week is going to be a 4 pound week for you, unless you are 400, 500+ pounds thats just probably not reality. 1.5-3.2 pounds is WAY more in line with what is likely.

Thanks again everyone. Weighed today and was down 1.8...I'll keep reminding myself to be patient and do what I know is right.

Rosehips, I had surgery 2/11/13, so I still have a ways to go.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
