Vision has declined since surgery. Anyone else?

Recommended Posts

This is so odd and the only thing I think could be causing it is my VSG surgery, even though it doesn't make sense! I had my VSG on January 9. Right before that I had my annual eye exam and my eyes had not changed in a couple years. Same prescription. I went back to the eye doctor a couple of weeks ago and suddenly my eyesight in my right eye has gone from a -5.50 to a -6.50 (yes I'm blind as a bat!) All since my surgery! my left eye got a little worse too but not as much as my right eye. So now, two weeks later, I am noticing my vision is not as clear in my right eye which means it has gotten worse within two weeks! I have another appointment for Wednesday. Has anyone had this happen or heard of it?

I felt like it happened to me, but I don't have it documented like you do. Not long after surgery, I had a new prescription. Within a month, it felt like I couldn't see well with my new prescription. I wrote about it here somewhere. I believe my contacts didn't feel right either. It did get better eventually.

my optometrist said I had dry eye syndrome and perscribed 2 eye drops, it took three visits before they wrote the perscription. Maybe this is why, becuase they said they couldnt get the perscription right until it was addressed.

This happened to me as well. My eye doctor said rapid weight loss can change the shape of the eye, resulting in a vision change. After a period of time it stabilizes.

Mine did as well. My Vitamin A level was low. My vision was restored to my pre-surgery sight after boosting that level back up.

This same thing happened to me as well. All the medicine I took for nausea said "may cause blurryness in vision". Well, I definitely had blurry vision. The problem is when I stopped taking the medicine my vision never returned to normal. :(

This is timely, I also am feeling that I am not seeing as well as I did pre op. I chalked it up to having anesthesia but reading the posts I was amazed, that I might not be loosing my mind. I will be going in to get new glasses, but I hope it stabilizes before I get my new glasses. I remember when I have had surgery in the past, that with the bigger surgeries, I did have a vision decrease. I wonder if there is any research to this phenomena?

I did read something a few months back about wls causing declining eye sight. I think it was to do with lower calorie. Try googling it.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
