HI everyone, I had surgery on Monday the 15th, with a hiatal hernia repair. I had to stay in the hospital for a few extra days due to my potassium being very low. I did not have much pain and I have done everything I have been told. When I came home on Thursday I was fine, but since Friday I can not stop crying and i have bouts of such sadness. They told me prior to surgery that I would be able to take my Effexor ER capsule after and then decided to give me some other form of it 2x's a day. I KNOW this is what is screwing up my head. I can not do this up and down roller coaster and it is not due to wanting to eat or lack of fluids. Can anyone tell me if they were able to take Effexor ER after surgery, I have been reading some people open up the capsule and put it with applesauce or yogurt. I think I will do this tomorrow but I will be calling the Doctor first. Please any help you can give me or shine some light into my severe crying spells would be such a help.

I had no problem taking mine. You don't wanna get off it especially right now. The withdrawals can be awful from what I read. My Dr was never concerned with me taking it as far as it getting stuck or anything. I guess you could open it and take it that way if needed. Bit the XR is timed release so opening it might affect it.

Thank you Carrie, I am so happy to see that someone else takes it, I was afraid of it getting stuck but thinking about it, the size of my esophagus has not changed at all. what mg do you take? i take 150 once a day.

My surgeon told me not to change a thing with my Effexor XR. I take 300mg. Once a day.

Hi, Lizanne - I'm so sorry to hear you are having such a hard time!

I can't help you with regard to your medication - I think you're on the right track by calling your doctor tomorrow to discuss it.

I can tell you this, though: it's really not unusual to have bouts of emotion overload after major surgery - just do a web search and you'll find lots of reputable sites with articles about it linked to all sorts of major surgery. I found this site to provide some interesting basic information regarding post-operative depression: http://www.healthguideinfo.com/treating-depression/p88339/ There are many others. This surgery is a big deal, and there's plenty of stress, fear and uncertainty that each of us will face that could trigger the emotional rollercoaster. Hang in there - you'll get through this, and you can always come here to talk about it if you need to vent!

I think some doctors are overly cautious because of fears that the extended release meds will release too quickly after the sleeve is done. I could see that as an issue with a bypass, but it seems a bit off when talking about surgery that did not monkey with the actual digestive process, just the size of the stomach.

Exactly right. My partner is a Chemist and he said the size of the stomach makes no difference. The medication slow releases into your system at the same rate. It's the medication that is slow releasing, not the stomach.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
