Hey everyone! I'm new on here and i am getting sleeved on June 11th. Until last week i had planned on getting the lapband until my surgeon talked me out of the decision. Anyways I am in desperate need of some advice. I HAVE to give up pop. Now before this, i could easily drink at least 6 cans of mountain dew a day. I feel like I'm giving up my best friend. Is this normal? lol Anybody have any tips? I get these awful Migraines everyday from not drinking pop and sometimes i cheat and sneak a pop just hoping my headache goes away. I bought a bottle of excedrin Migraine at the dollar store but haven't tried it yet. How did you guys give up drinking pop?

I am a coke zero drinker. I can easily drink a 2 liter a day. I know how hard it is going to be to give it up permanently, but I am anxious to get healthy, so it's a small price to pay. Over the last week, have weened myself to one glass a day and it sucks, but it's doable.

I am so busy trying new teas, new crystal lights, new flavored waters, etc. to distract myself from CZ, it's not been as bad as I expected.

Think of how worth it will be. Don't buy it and think of the money you will save. Put your MD money in a jar each day and save it for a great new outfit when you hit goal. That's my motivation. Hell, I may be able to by a Bug convertible in cash with my savings! :D

I also drink diet mountain dew and Pepsi. I a, having some headaches from trying to give up. Iced tea is a good alternative and there are lots of great favors out there now.

I feel your pain as I'm supposed to give up coffee! I think it would be easier for me to give up sex! I haven't done it yet but I have cut down from 4 cups a day to 2 cups & next week I will be mixing my regular ground coffee with Decaf so that I can slowly de-tox. I would never just give it up cold turkey, not fond of headaches! Just ween off slowly. You still have time. Good luck to you!

I LOVED pop pre-sleeve. I really liked coke zero and just prior to surgery I was stopping at convenience stores for large half coke zero/half reg cokes. I was told to stop pop a long time before surgery, but couldn't do it. Well, at 4 months post-op I haven't had one since December. It doesn't appeal. If I were you I would wean off of it. Start reducing it by 1 per day.

I switched to tea sweetened with equal, then to Decaf tea. I do drink soda now, but WAY less than before surgery, maybe 2 cans a day. For me, it's tough to get soda in when I'm concentrating on Water. I also drink a lot of decaf tea and coffee now and count both as part of my daily water quota.

I had to give up coffee. It was hard, but I thought it would be easier to deal with the pain pre-op, and have more energy to deal with all the other post-op issues. I agree with weaning off if you have terrible headaches. I was pretty grumpy and groggy for a few days, but it went away quick.

My favorite flavored no-cal beverages are Crystal Light Lemonaide and Diet Lipton Green Tea with Citrus. I also like Sleepy Time Tea.

I agree with others- wean yourself! I drink a lot of crystal light now. I LOVE their mango peach green tea flavor.

It's my understanding that the no-no is the carbonation. If you want to treat yourself once in a while to the taste, can't you just let it go flat then put some ice in it and enjoy it that way??

I feel your pain! I start my 2 week liquid diet tomorrow (surgery May 6th) and Diet Dr. Pepper is next to me as we speak! I feel like I'm losing a loved one. I HATE that I can't drink again, but somehow I know it'll be worth it in the end. I say drink it all up while you can! Bottoms up :)

Your headaches are likely because of the caffeine withdrawal - Mt. Dew is caffeinated, and if you've been drinking a six-pack or more a day, that's a fair amount of caffeine. Others on this thread are correct - wean yourself more gradually and you'll minimize the headaches. However, you can do it cold turkey. You'll likely have to fight headaches for 3-5 days, but then it's over.

I was a diet coke junkie. Easily 5 bottles or cans a day. I switched to Water with mio at first...then just plain water. Once in a while I will have a arizona diet peach tea but no pop. About a month ago I accidently picked up someones glass thinking it was mine and took a sip of diet coke...disgusting!!!! You can do it.!!!!!

This might be somewhat unpopular but just know that I am saying this as someone who was in your shoes (I had the lapband before I had the sleeve)

You might want to hold off on weight loss surgery. Just weight 6 months or so, because it sounds like your not ready. Of course, this is just my impression based off only the little bit of information you provided but let me tell you something. You will have success with weight loss surgery when you want it as bad as you want to breath. When you want it so bad that whether or not you 'want' some soda is totally irrelevant because you are on a mission, THEN you are ready.

Thank you guys for all your help! I'm done with pop completely now and the Excedrin Migraine has become my best friend. Gonna be able to stop taking it soon though since my headaches are getting less severe and less frequent. Hallelujah! :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
