Scared outta my wits

Recommended Posts

Hello all I'm new to all of this I am scheduled to have my surgery on 4/24/13. I honestly didn't think it would happen for me. I am scared to death now that I have a date. I don't anyone who I can talk who can understand my position. My family is supportive but they aren't in my shoes. I can use some courage

I was totally in your shoes 4 weeks ago. You will be just fine, I promise. I had a sit down with my doc and asked all my questions and had a good "im terrified" cry. He just reassured me I was in good hands. The morning of surgery I was so cool. I only got nervous for a minute and thats when I hugged my husband and son right before I went in.

For me the worst part was the gas and up to about day 4 after surgery. Like I said im a month po now and feel just like my old self.....just a little lighter.

I hope this helps ease things and I wish you the very best.! L

bug02

its great that you do have family/friends support! unfortuantely many people don't have that support :(

family/friend - no, other people aren't in your shoes

they can't possibly really relate - but they are there for you!!!! thats a good thing!!!!

and "we're" all around too, anxiously waiting to hear how things are going (most of us our nosey  )

I am 15 months PO, and i'm still around to talk about "it" :)

having major surgery like the WLS - OMG its scary for almost all of us!!!!

Surgery on Wednesday - egads getting close!!!! :)

understandable to be scared and nervous -

give yourself some time to be happy and excited - you are doing something great for yourself - good for you!!!

your new life is about to start :)

take a nap during surgery

when you wake up, you might hurt alittle with some gas et al hopefully you'll start to feel better gradually, sooner than later!!!!

you will continue on the road to better health, happiness and a longer life

you will probably have a few bumps in the road :( but that's ok - the outcome/result of the sleeve are great.

remember, you have to work with the sleeve - then the sleeve will work for you

you have to follow the "rules" of the sleeve!!! sleeve needs your help, so "it" can help you :)

good luck on Wednesday

i will be rooting you on :)

best of luck

speedy recovery

What are you afraid of? Are you afraid of the actual surgery, like complications or are you afraid of failure or afraid of changing everything you know about eating? Whatever you're afraid of, I'll guarantee, many of us have been afraid of the SAME thing.. I wasn't afraid of the actual surgery, I was just afraid I would fail. I was afraid (and still am sometimes) that I would just fall off the wagon and eat lots of slider foods and fail miserably. The other day I ate 1/2 ounce of corn chips with my cottage cheese and half way through I thought : OMG, what if this is a slippery slope and tomorrow I wake up in a gutter clutching an empty family size bag of Doritos. I am terrified of failure sometimes. There I admitted it..See, most of us are/were afraid of something.

I think you're in the right place. We don't get a lot of people here who have the surgery because they HATE food :P I've found a lot of support at MFP. (myfitnesspal.com) I started journaling my food there several months before surgery and it helps me a lot. It also helps to see what other sleeved people eat and my MFP friends help get me back on track if I stray a bit.

I was a little scared of the surgery, but mostly scared of failing. I had failed everything else I had tried, why would this be any different? But it is different. You are getting a powerful tool to help you. You can do it. And you know what? All the changes are so worth it in the end when you walk into a regular size womens clothing department, and that really cute thing that caught your eye ends up fitting!!!

I am also scared of all the things others mentioned--the actual surgery, having complications like a leak, not being able to eat the right amount of Protein and fluids to heal, not having my "comfort food" to help me when I am down or anxious, failing to follow the program...and just a overall fear of my life being different--I really want it to be better (healthier, more energy, longer life), but I fear that it will be even worse :( I do have a few friends and family members who are supportive, but also some of the non-supportive side; and overall most of them just don't truly understand the struggle...what I do have personally is a trust in God, so for me that is where I am trying to place my fears

I've been scared off and on ever since making The Call to my surgeon's office to ask for information.

I have four friends who have had WLS (sleeve and RNY), and they're really a great support for me. Each of them is thrilled with their results and highly recommends WLS.

I guess at the moment, my fears are about the unknown: having the surgery and the healing process. I have had surgery before; 2 C-sections 16 and 13 years ago, and I remember the way post-surgery feels. I *think* I'm ready for the pain and having to take things one step at a time after going home. The difference is that I've never been "put under" completely, and I have a nagging fear of general anesthesia. I'm afraid of the (admittedly rare) complications that could happen during and after surgery--leaks, stricture--ack, don't get me started! Last night I read the "Would You Have WLS Again" thread--all 11 pages--and I ping-pong'ed back and forth between "I'm gonna be fine, this will be a wonderful change" and "OMG what if ____________ happens to me?"

All that being said, I'm really grateful to have found this forum, where there are so many people to ask for advice and answers. Informing myself is going to be a huge part of getting my head in the right place!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
