iverina 33 Posted April 20, 2013 Hey guys. So I'm new to this forum... I was originally going to get rny but decided on the vsg. I am scheduled for surgery may 20. Anywho i was curious how bc plays a role in surgery before and after? I know it's virtually ineffective with rny but what about vsg?? Also did you ladies have to stop before surgery because of risk for blood Clots?
laners777 145 Posted April 20, 2013 I can't speak for stopping birth control or not before surgery, probably a DR question. But if you don't want a baby, do something afterward. I am a lap bander who lost weight, got pregnant and gained weight back, not all of it but enough. Now having horrible problems with band and awaiting insurance approval for a sleeve revision. After losing about 75lbs, I got pregnant. We tried for 10 years to get pregnant and it happened as soon as I got to the magic number. It was a wonderful miracle and we are happy with our lovebug but if you don't do some kind of birth control, you will likely get a bundle of joy! Good luck on your surgery and I hope to not be far behind you for surgery. 2 Dannipo and iverina reacted to this

halfofheather 8 Posted April 20, 2013 My doctor said I had to stop Birth Control pills 2 weeks before surgery because of blood clots
OnlyDownFromHere 6 Posted April 20, 2013 My surgeon told me to stop BC at least 2 weeks prior and to stay off it for at least 6 moths after. I'm still pre op. I went off my pill and had a Mirena IUD inserted in. I've had it for a month and a half and I love it so far. Sent from my DROID RAZR using VST

OnlyDownFromHere 6 Posted May 3, 2013 I'm sorry I wasn't clear. I meant the Pill. He wanted me to stop the BC pill prior to surgery and stay off for many months after. No oral birth control at all because the blood clot risk. Mirena is an IUD and is effective against pregnancy so I had that put in. It also is acceptable to have in during the surgery. iverina 33 Posted May 3, 2013 I am getting the mirena in on Monday. I say talk to your obgyn because you decide. It really is the safest for wls patients
OnlyDownFromHere 6 Posted May 3, 2013 There's also Paraguard, which is an IUD without hormones. I would have stayed on the Pill but had to be off of it for surgery cause of the blood clots. The IUD is just as effective. There really isn't another more effective method you can use that's appropriate for surgery other than the IUD.
