On a serious note (sorry guys) cross addiction is very real and is something to be aware of EVEN if you never had a drinking problem before.

Don't be scared, be aware and go into this surgery with information and a support system

(Counseling) in place..

Ok back to the fun and games :P

This thread has been a great insight, but also a great laugh! I have truly enjoyed the jokes. Speaking of alcohol, I am nervous to have a drink! My surgeon said after 1 month it would be ok. I have a couple weddings coming up, and of course don't want to have one drink and become the life of the party. I understand alcohol effects people differently. What were some of your experiences after the first drink? What do you like to drink since you can't drink soda? My other concern is how many calories that are in liquor. I surely don't want to not be able to eat all day because I choose to have a drink. I will really have to question wether or not it's actually worth it.

I've only had alcohol on a couple of social occasions.. It hit me fast and made me very flush and uneasy for a minute or two,

The interesting thing for me is I felt very buzzed quickly but then that feeling of being buzzed went away went away just as quickly..

I had some red wine and one time a very small glass of Vodka and cranberry and added ice to it all night.

I've never had a problem with alcohol, just food,

But I will say (as I have said before so please forgive me) that weeks after surgery I was still taking my pain meds every night (same time that I did my best eating too) to feel "better" I started looking forward to my night time dose.

I refilled my meds twice :(

I told my husband what I was doing and how I was feeling and we threw the pain meds out.

I was never hooked on drugs just food..

My doctor said to wait 6 months before I had any alcohol. But advised against it totally because of the empty calories and the effect on the liver.

I'm going to a wine tasting tonight. It's a small event. 3 different wines. Quantity is about 1/2 a Dixie cup full each. They use small wine glasses.

I will share how it goes.

I will be in Kauai with the wife in a couple weeks and am planning to do Rum tasting at the brewery they have in town. Should be fun!! Maybe I will even get brave as a post op and eat some rum infused cake (would be my first desert experience).

Enjoy the wine tasting!!

I can give you a preview. Was 6 weeks on Wednesday. The NUT assured me a glass of wine is just fine as did the PA on my post op. Found out last week that we had the opportunity for a trip and now that I have all my dietary restrictions lifted, (that is scary in itself) I tried a glass of wine on Sunday to see how it would go. (3 days early) and I was fine. Hubby and I enjoyed a glass of wine last night but it does get me buzzed pretty fast. Probably because I still can't always get in my 800 calories. Felt a touch of acid reflux but was almost time for my pepcid anyway. Didn't feel the desire to have another glass though and pre surgery I would have for sure. Tummy told me that was plenty. Took my time with it and it lasted almost 2 hours.

At least it helped me get to 800 calories but wouldn't recommend it every day. :) :)

Losing less than 40 pounds a month makes you a "slow loser"

You can never have coffee.. ever again.

You can never have soda.. ever again. If you do the bubbles will stretch out your stomach.

You have to take special chewable vitamins and supplements that cost tons of money.

You have to take Protein Drinks for the rest of your life.

If you are stalled it is likely because you are eating too many calories, too few calories, too little Protein, too many carbs, too few carbs, too little Water, too much fat, not enough fat, not enough Gummy bears or whatever.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
