Leak after stomach healed?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I was just wondering is it possible to get a leak after your stomach is presumed "healed"? Thanks!

I honestly don't think so, I at least have never heard of that. Not completely sure. Either there is a leak or there isn't. I know a girl who had been sleeved but didn't know that the leak she had was there until she suffered several bouts of pneumonia. Therefore, it was at around 6-9 months that she found out about the leak.

So at that point was the leak gone? Or was the rest of her stomach healed but that spot? Strange...

I am down 42 lb since my sleeve in 02/14/2013 when I read about the leak when she was 6 to 9 months out that really got to me, I don't have a leak and don't believe I will get one this late in the game, look like her doctor should have caught the leak. and he didn't or she is really bad. sir I will be praying for you that every thing will turn out okay.

Yeah, my understanding is that by 6 months were healed over. Surprises that a leak occurred that late in the process. Geez and here I was thinking I was out of the risk catagory.

What's going on? Haven't seen you in a while.

Leaks are most likely to show up in the first six to seven weeks.. It could happen later but the chances of that are pretty low.

From what I understand the leak had been there but didn't show up in the testing because of the swelling, once the swelling went down she went on like normal. It was such a small hole that she never noticed it. She started getting frequent infections and then they found a very small leak after some further investigation. My guess is that it was there from the operation, but the swelling didn't allow such a small hole be exposed on the leak test.

Unfortunately, it is possible at any time if you continually over stuff your stomach. There was a lady who used to come to our support group who had it happen twice. Once at 8 weeks and again in a different spot at 9 months! She was eating things she should not have been like too much bread and then drinking when it got stuck and drinking soda. Think about what happens when you shake a can of soda and then pop the top. Same thing can happen in your stomach. If the pressure builds up too much and it can't get out the opening, it will take the path of least resistance, through the staple line. Her advice, don't be stupid!!!

That sounds sooooo painful. Oh my gosh !!! I thought that the stomach heals in about 4-8 weeks and after that you are in the clear from leaks, but from what your story says..... our stomach will be fragile for the rest of our lives.... thanks for sharing her story, it is a learning moment for me.

You just have to choose wisely. Poor choices even before surgery come with complications. I know that's how I got here!

I would think the path of least resistance would be back up and out of your mouth, not through a triple row of titanium staples.

Not if you have a strong stomach valve and a weak spot in your staple line.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
