Another question. I'm getting ready to tell my work I may need off anywhere from 2 to 3 weeks for an elective surgery. I'm afraid they may need some sort of doctors note saying I'm having surgery. Yea I will probably tell them what I'm having done but I don't know if I'll need to use FMLA. I don't think I will, but what if they still need a note before I have the surgery?

As far as I know they will handle FMLA and Dr. notes at your request. My surgeon did. As do many others.

roxanne hes a nice guy very efficient check ed on me twice a day and the other doc twice a day nurses and jessica a lot more. the last day me and the other patients were just all three sitting in his office chatting he is experienced and honestly i remember nothing after my getting on.gurney in my room i woke up back in my room in my bed. the hospital is old and dated and i just wanted to knock it out and go home to my family. i slept off and on the first day and walked the second day and surfed the net. no drain no preop diet due to low bmi

Did you feel the the hospital was too outdated? Was it clean? And how much pain were you in after the surgery? Thanks for sharing. pS...what was your bmi?

This is so overwhelming. I just knew there would not be any problems when it came to my ins co & now they have an additional 30-90 days to make a decision... I just keep thinking how far I could be progressing by then. (Sad). Anyway, I have a hiatal hernia & my surgeon here said he was going to fix it when he sleeved me.. Wonder if the Mexican drs will as well? Anyone know?

I used Dr. Alvarez, he is amazing! Can't wait to go to his patient reunion on May, 18!! I drove from Houston, tx- eagle Pass, tx and Rosie (the driver) picked us up the next day. I paid 8,200 but they knocked off $500 because I was driving all the way to the border and not staying in Sam Antobio and getting picked up. I am 9 months post op and I've lost 80 pounds, with 20 more to go. I went from a size 22, to a size 8. Any questions just ask. Or u can visit his website at endobariatric.com and contact Susan, his coordinator.

I'm wondering the same thing. I hear a lot of people who have a hernia get it removed during the surgery, but it's only the people who had the surgery in the US who have said that so far.

Most of them will fix a hiatal hernia, yes.

Yes, most surgeons in Mx will fix a hiatal hernia.

It may be extra for some. I did not have one myself, but I do not think Dr. Aceves charges extra.

Yes, it's a common treatment for doctors in Mexico to repair a hiatal hernia at the time of surgery. Some doctors charge an additional fee (I've read $500 here before) and some don't charge extra. If you know you have one and are interested in Mexico, I'd just ask whatever surgeons you are interested in potentially treating you about it.

Mine did, too. I only took a week off, using vacation time, but work requested FMLA paperwork as soon as I said I was having a medical procedure. I had no issues having my coordinator fill out my FMLA forms and then getting me a return to work note. Honestly, having done the process with doctors in the US at varying times over the years, it was the easiest time I've ever had with the paperwork part of it.

My surgery is May 3 ..I requested the time off and am using FMLA..my company doesn't allow unpaid leave unless its FMLA..and I don't want to use all my vacation so I can still have some time at Christmas...I am planning to take a week off as I have a desk job..but its nice knowing I am covered if I need longer..most of it is without pay but I am ok with that. I have lost 6lbs already on the preop diet since Sunday (5 Days ago)..I am ready..going alone and kind of glad now..I have 2 kids, 9yrs and 1yrs and a husband, full time job..etc..so I don't get much time for myself..plan to use this time to reflect on the things that got me to this point of having surgery so I can change them. Going through Medical Tourism company..Garcia and Venezuala..at Mi Hospital..overall costs - surgery $4500 / airfare - $381..

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
