6 month checkup

Recommended Posts

Down 60 lbs total. Diabetes has not resolved with the surgery and weight loss. Back on all my pre op meds. What a disappointment. Dr. Says due to age (65) and years of type 2 diabetes , probably will not be cured like some here on this forum.

Sorry to hear about the diabetes...but your weight loss will be better for your body in many other ways. Keep up the good work!

I am.66 and have the same problem. I was on 150 units of insulin, I took 4 times a day plus 2000 metforin. Now on same metforin but down to 30 units of insulin. I am 4 1/2 months out and down 63 lbs. stopped the cholesterol medicine and will check numbers in 2 months. Did the surgery mainly to get off of insulin and endo says it may still work as more weight comes off. I have not exercised yet due to pain. I need to find some kind of exercise I can do.

How many months out are you? Are you on insulin? Do you exercise?

Keep in touch, not many of us older ones.

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear this. Especially since I'm hoping to stop my Glumetza soon! Even with prescription coverage, it cost about $100 a month for my Glumetza! If I could take the Metformin, it would be cheaper but my tummy doesn't tolerate it.

My doc told me to stop all meds when I start the one week pre-op liquid diet. He said he'd run labs on me 3 months out & see if I need to go back on any. Hope not!

ckunes, you may be able to get off your meds after you've lost all your weight? Is there a possibility of that?

I am a little over 6 months post op. I take Water aerobics 3 x a week and walk and do light weights. Need to loose another 30 lbs.and take 1000 of Metformin twice a day. I may have to go back on my Glybyride too. My A1C is 7. Should be below 6 . Sometimes this surgery doesn't work for diabetes.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
