Summer heat & dehydration

Recommended Posts

Ok so if all goes as planed, I should have my sleeve end of June or July sometime . Being big in the summer is already at times difficult , I sweat like crazy & I am always thirsty.

Questions:

How to stay hydrated after VSG in the summer heat ?

Exercise & hydration?

Sweating after surgery ?

After reading some of the post ops I am worried about summer time sleeve :/

Helpful hints from summer sleevers ?

I'm getting my sleeve done in May. I'm also very interested in the answers you receive to your questions. I work in my gardens and out on our farm all summer. It has not been unusual for me for gulp down 16 oz of Water at a pop when working outside so I'm obviously worried about dehydration too.

I'm beginning to think I'm going to have to get one of those Camelback things you wear on your back that has a straw attached so I can try to remember to sip away ALL THE TIME!!!!

All of those out there with sleeves, please tell us what you do when you are working outside in the summer to avoid dehydration!!!!

I was sleeved in May of last year so I went through the summer. I ha a struggle at first and did get dehydrated. Ended up in hospital for 3 days. My suggestion to you is to pretty much make sure that water bottle is permanently attached to your hand. If you get tired of drinking plain water( I did), make crystal light( or something similar). Gulping down Water once you get thirsty could actually make you sick. And it hurts a lot. Remember to always sip the water as directed for the first month at least. I know it is a pain but the alternative was not fun. My doctor threatened a pic line in my shoulder because I was having such a hard time in the first month. Some doctors say to not use a straw for a certain amount of time, I actually found that I did better by having one. I also found that ice cold drinks were best. Any drink close to room temperature made me sick and often still does. I hope I was at least a little helpful. Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
