Riding horses post-op

Recommended Posts

Any post op VSG out there that ride horses?? If so, please comment and tell me how far post op you were when you rode your horse. I have a great horse and I don't fear any problems with him, just curious how uncomfortable you were riding?

my doctor said at my 3 week post op appointment I could ride and go easy. Unfortunately, between the doctors appointment and when I could ride I hurt my knee. Can't wait to get back on though-down 60 pounds since the last time I rode so it will feel completely different!

Hi brendak! I think it was four months before I tried to ride. I think I would've been fine at the 6 week mark. Check with ur doc. I recommend that u don't let too much time pass. My saddle doesn't fit :( and I practically flipped out of the saddle when I rode last. My balance was completely off kilter. Lol. U might want to check in with cowgirljane. I recall her talking about doing drill team. I am more of a three to four times a month gal. Right now my son has been doing the riding. I've had no interest. Good luck!

Hi BrendaK!

I'm an avid equestrian and rode 11 days out. Just in the arena. Probably too early and risky for most but it was on my most trusted, dead broke gelding and I was just fine. My surgeon cleared me at my 3 week post-op appointment saying that the inside stitches are pretty much secure at 2 weeks. I was sleeved 2/18 and I can't imagine waiting 4 months or more....I've been riding a couple of days a week since 2 weeks out of surgery!

Oh and I did forget to mention that my balance has definitely been a little off since the surgery. I'm just assuming that it's due to my body getting used to the rapid weight loss and the fact that my core muscles were disturbed with surgery. But it's getting better and like some said, I'm sure my horses will appreciate the weight difference! ;)

Thanks Gina

I ride 2-3 times a week and like you can't imagine not riding for months. First time you rode, did it feel like your insides were juggling around? I know that's a crazy question but its something I keep thinking about.

My surgeon told me 2 weeks, but the nurse practitioner said 4.

I'm not sure either of them understand I ride competitive dressage and really use my core for those sitting trot extensions! But I will see how I feel at about 3 weeks and just take it easy at first.

Right now I'm only a week out, and actually a little nervous about getting on my tractor tomorrow, but there is work to be done, so I guess I'll just go slow to prevent bouncing.

Yaya,

Your life sounds like mine. Please keep me posted how your tractor work and your first ride goes. My surg is scheduled for May 9th.

Danyelleb' date=' I'm new to this site, how do I contact CowgirlJane?[/quote']

U can try sending her a personal message. I'm on my phone most of the time. Click the conversation button and go from there. I hope this is helpful.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
