sjbarnhill 0 Posted December 5, 2006 I just had my first fill today. I am wondering if this is a normal occurence... Not only did he not use any flouro at all (which sounds like its normal) He didn't numb me up at all. It aggravates me because while i was waiting for him to come into the room, all the stuff he might use was sitting on the counter and there was a bottle of lidocane there so I thought for sure he was gonna numb that area, but no. He just stuck that needle right in there. It flippin hurt. Is that normal?? Does any one else's doc do that??
Kat817 19 Posted December 5, 2006 Mine does not use any numbing agent, nor does he use fluoro as a general rule. he will do either or both if requested. It was not pleasant the first time, as it took several sticks to locate the port ( a low profile, placed by a different Dr.) But once he found it, he explained how he KNEW he found it, and proved it to my DH! The second fill also took a few pokes, but all has been well, it is minor discomfort---would rather have those pokes than the 75 pounds back!!! Hope your next fill goes smoother for you---try asking for something to numb you next time, since he obviously has it and had used it for someone prior to your visit. Good luck with your new fill!!! Remember to stick to liquids for awhile, and let the irritation go down some!!! You are on your way!!WoooHooo!!!! Kat
TamifromAL 1 Posted December 5, 2006 My doc (his nurse, actually) offered to numb me, but pointed out that some people prefer to get stuck once intead of twice. Since I generally have a pretty high tolerance to pain anyway, I opted to go without the numbing shot. Fortunately, mine wasn't painful at all. Tami
ginger 0 Posted December 5, 2006 My doc doesn't use lidocaine either!! I just had my third fill a few hours ago and it took 5 pokes to find the port. It is uncomfortable, but not unbearable.
juliegeraci 7 Posted December 5, 2006 My doctor uses a numbing agent. I wouldn't want to have it done otherwise. He doesn't use fluro. Good luck.
JJB 2 Posted December 6, 2006 My Dr. has used something to numb me every time. I think I would rather have it that way.
flabuless 18 Posted December 6, 2006 I don't have numbing with my doc...it is uncomfortable but not grossly unbearable...I feel tender in the port area after but I manage...I hate it when he digs around with his fingers trying to find the darn thing...that can hurt too! sunshine5 0 Posted August 26, 2007 What is Flouro? I'm new at this...
skyeblu79 0 Posted August 27, 2007 That sounds a little like my experience w/my first aftercare doc, only mine was intolerable. He said that maybe my seroma hadn't completely healed. I was scared for a while to try again. I didn't go back to him again. I ended up going to another doc and she used a numbing agent. It wasn't a needle, so no double pain. Instead it was something cold that she sprayed over the area. I felt nothing, but a little pressure. And she did use fluro. I feel really comfortable getting another fill.....Now it's no big deal. bandfan1 0 Posted May 27, 2008 first fill today. No pain at all..not even a prick. No numbing agents. He did ask me to push my stomach against his fingers so he could find it easier...... taking the band-aid off was the most pain that I had!!!
Kalipso2 25 Posted May 27, 2008 my doctor used a numbing spray that hurt worse than the needle probably would have. they do flouro for the first fill only and then only if there is a problem.
niki 1 Posted May 30, 2008 Nine fills here, no fluoro and no numbing agent. My doc always gets it right at first try. niki
jfc193 718 Posted May 30, 2008 My doc uses a numbing agent and then has so far hit the port on the first try. It is probably a good thing because I am a bit of wimp when it comes to pain :-)
