Issues with ursadiol/actigall medication?

Recommended Posts

I am almost 3 weeks out, and my doctor put me on ursadiol (aka actigall) to prevent gallstones during the rapid weight loss. The first go-round, they called in 500 mg once a day and said to cut or crush them. They are GIGANTIC. I tried cutting them and couldn't get them down. I tried crushing them, and since I'm still on all liquids, they don't dissolve and it tasted so bitter and disgusting that I was nauseous for hours. So...I went to the pharmacy and asked what other forms it comes in. They had a much smaller 250 mg version, so when I went for my follow-up I asked for that and they said it was fine - and to take it 2 times a day, or both at once. I took it today, swallowed it whole, and I'm still nauseous. Anyone else have this problem?? I can't imagine feeling like this every day for the next 6 months...

My Ursodiol is in capsules with powder inside. I break open and stir into a little (like a TBSP) SF applesauce.

I've not had a nausea with them.. Is it a known side effect? If not maybe it will get better in the days to come, I know lots of things made me nauseous in the early stages.

That might be the next step... I don't start purees until Tuesday though and I hadn't taken it since my surgery. Didn't want to wind up with gallstones and another surgery!!

Before I was on purees, I broke up the capsule and put it in some Propel (like a shot glass amount). Stirred it with the tip of a paring knife. A little bitter but pretty easy to get down.

I have capsules, no one told me to open them up so I've just been swallowing them (without issues) so far.

I have capsules, and they are easy for me to swallow. However, my surgeon DID say (when he prescribed mine) that some people do NOT tolerate them well - and if that was the case, to talk to him. Not sure what the alternative might be, but I gathered that there was an alternative course of action if I had problems with it.

I have to take the capsules twice a day. I have had no issues swallowing them. My wife has an issue swallowing pills and use a spoon full of honey or applesauce to get them down.

I take the two 250s, and I've not had problems with them at all. Wish you you didn't have to deal with this!

I'm still on the two 250s - much better now. I guess it just took time for the swelling and everything to go down.

I believe I am taking the smaller dose. It is a pink and white capsule and I take it twice a day. The info on the bottle says to take with food. I have not had a problem so far. Hope it gets better for you!

I have capsules, but do you take it on a empty stomach? Maybe you should eat something first. My nausea continues and I am almost 5 mos post op. I became lactose intolerant and even though I cut out all diary, the nausea continued. Then I realized my Protein Powder had milk in it! :o

Since I stopped using those my stomach is a lot better. Good luck
