I've never had a restriction put on coffee drinking by my surgeon, and he's super conservative. I really rely on it to help keep things moving....

Who drinks coffee??? And why shouldn't we?

I drink a 16 oz. mug of coffee almost every morning. It's like a routine for me.

dr. said it affects the healing and not good for stomach. At least for 2 month until it total heals.

There are various reasons why it's not recommended by some doctors, especially the caffeinated variety. A couple of them which I've heard about are:

  • Caffeinated coffee has long had a reputation in the medical world for being diuretic, which isn't good for people struggling to get in their liquids. (However, there have been some recent studies which seem to indicate that it really doesn't have an impact unless you're drinking 5-7 cups a day or more. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/caffeinated-drinks/AN01661 speaks to this).
  • Caffeine has been associated with increased pain related to ulcers, and may have some small impact on acid reflux. It seems like it might be a good idea to avoid anything to worsen the impact to your healing stomach, and in particular avoiding anything that might increase GERD/heartburn, right?

That said, I've seen plenty of diets where Decaf is allowed very early on, and some that don't restrict coffee in moderation at all. Best idea is to pay attention to what your doctor and NUT say, as there may be specific reasons why they don't consider it appropriate.

My doctor and nut said Decaf coffee is fine and reg coffee after I have my 64 ounces in. I don't drink that now as I still have a hard time getting in my liquids.

I don't drink it regularly so when I do I don't sweat it. Even drinking it daily once you are pretty well healed up doesn't sound so terrible.

Every Dr and NUT seems to have different opinions on this. Mine doesn't have any restrictions on caffeine, for that matter they even had it on my tray in the hospital post op. I drink at least 1 cup every day and sometimes much more then that. It hasn't caused any adverse reactions for me. I believe that the issues with ulcers and GERD are more prevalent in people who had issues with those kind of things before anyhow. But as always you should speak to your dr and go with what they say not what anyone else is doing.

Two cups every morning with half a scoop of Protein powder. Been drinking coffee since two days after surgery. I was told just not to go overboard on the coffee.< /p>

Also, I count it as Fluid.. American coffee has so much liquid in it that the amount of Fluid in it far outweighs any miniscule diuretic effect that the coffee may have.. meaning you're taking in WAY more fluid by drinking the coffee than the coffee would actually flush out of your system... Now if I was drinking Arabic or Cuban coffee I wouldn't count it as fluid.

I never had a restriction on coffee, they even gave it to me in the hospital. But, strangly enough I can't seem to drink more then a few sips of it..it just doesn't taste good anymore...I think I've completely lost the desire for it?

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
