Length of stay at Hospital Angeles with BMI of 50?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am scheduled for surgery on April 20th with Dr. Corvala at Hopital Angeles. I have a BMI of 50. In the last week I've lost 13 pounds on this liquid diet, and I have another week to go. My question is, if you have a similar situation, how long were you in the hospital? I've been told to expect 5 days in the hospital and 2 in the hotel. Does this sound right to you? I don't want to stay in Mexico any longer than I have to. I would much rather come back to San Diego and get a hotel. Just wondering what other peoples experiences have been. Thanks, Lara

That sounds like a very long time in the hospital. My BMI was 48. I was sleeved by Dr's Cabrera and Valenzuela at Mi Doctor Hospital, Cabrera and Valenzuela are among the many great doctors who were trained by Corvala by the way... I was in the hospital for two nights.. and honestly, I probably didn't even need that second night.

I've never heard of a routine 5 day hospital stay for VSG.. I think the Duodenal switch may have a five day stay in some cases, but I've never seen anyone who stayed that long unless they had complications.

That's kind of what I thought. I bought insurance on my flights. I'm hopefull I will have an experience similar to yours and be able to come home a couple of days early. Thanks for the reply!

Lara,

How long you need to stay is dependant upon your surgeons assessment of your specific health needs and so cannot really be compared with someone else. Discuss this with your surgeon, I know it might seem to be a pain having to stay in a few more days but better that than developing problems without that specialist medical support on hand.

Also, best check that your travel/health insurance is valid if you travel against medical advice.

Good luck!

I had my surgery on Saturday. I am being released from Hospital Angeles tomorrow with Dr. Corvala's blessing to fly home Wednesday. I'm feeling very good. The first day

I had gas pains in my left shoulder, but other than that no real pain or nausea. All in all its been a great experience so far!

My BMI was 49.9 lol and I spent 2 days in the hospital and 2 days touring the area around the Lucerna and that was plenty. Unless your surgeon has a reason anymore than 2 days in any hospital would just be too much for me. I spent 2 days for my csection and that is a MUCH worse operation (times a zillion lol).

Hospital Angeles with dr Corvala is letting me stay one day pre op and four days post op at the hospital(i.e. not a hotel room). I have a bmi of 44. that is one of the reasons i'm going with hospital angeles as I will be in TJ all alone and believe I may need some nursing help with the recovery in the first few days.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
