How many carbs should I be eating?

I've seen this question posed on here several times, but have never really seen a good answer to it. Today I had my 2-month follow-up with my NUT, and lo and behold, she shared a recent article from "The Bariatric Times" addressing that very question. I'll post the link, but the bottom line was for the first year post-op, keep carbs under 90 grams, and after 1 year under 130 grams.

And if you can, try to keep carbs under 30 or 20. This will be like Atkins inductions and the weight melts off without heavy exercise in the first 5 months. Following month 5 yu should slowly n crease carbs and really get a good exercise program started.

I was a total of four months with the super low carb like this (3.5 months preop and 2 weeks post op) and I did lose a lot of weight (for me) I'm now on regular "low carb" keeping my carbs under 70 and I have to say that even though I have been stalled for the past two weeks, It feels great to give my body a little break from ketosis. I think I'll go like this for another month and then consider returning to the ketogenic approach.

Thanks for reporting with your experience. That is a good point about being able to go back and forth. It is probably better that way in order to give your body the ol' "shock and awe" treatment. The body is far to good at adaptation and will get efficient at whatever you are doing if you stay that way for too long.

Silly question. How in earth do you keep your carbs under 30? What are you eating or not eating?

Choose lean Protein first and only eat carbs if they are part of the Protein food.

During 1st 6 months, the most carbs I have eaten as part of protein is 2-3 g. I did not drink milk nor did I eat fruit. Nuts were not part of my diet for a long time, but I added them back in around month 5 in terms of energy squares (good carbs / fats before running). The energy squares get burned up when running 10 k.

Now that I am done with weight loss, I get carbs from veggies, raw honey (paleo bar) and energy squares. You have to be careful when eating out to know the nutritional content of food items on the menu. Sometimes I mess up and order something with too much sugar or fat because it looks healthy. I do not eat breads or sweets.

This way of eating may be too strict for most during first 6 months, but worked great for me. I am slowly adding in food items that are compatible with a paleo diet. This is still a learning process to find a good diet that helps me maintain yet provides energy for an active lifestyle of running, hiking and cross fit.

Thats because there is no good answer. That is completely up to you, your surgeon, and what you are comfortable with while still maintaining consistent losses. I know I eat more carbs than recommended but I am steady losing pounds so I don't stress over it too much.

Great article. I think the question of carbs has to include some discussion of starches. I know I'm the starch police, but there is a huge difference between eating 25 carbs of veggies and a donut with 25 carbs. I honestly think there should be an additional macro nutrient group to separate the 2 because they do not act the same in your body once swallowed. Frankly with the sleeve, it's hard to eat too many healthy carbs, they are usually so low calorie and bulky and we just don't have the room. But it's easy to eat too many jelly Beans.< /p>

By the way, I do not count Fiber and sugar alcohols in my total daily carbs.

        Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

      Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

      Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

        Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
