I'm scheduled to have my surgery in just 3 days and I'm having second thoughts...is this normal? I miss food. I miss eating. I'm worried that after the surgery I will feel unsatisfied with food, that I'll always be wanting to eat more even though my body says no. I'm worried that 1 year from now (or 2 or 4 or hell even 10 years from now) that I'll still feel like I want to eat more.

Well Jen, you are correct that you will still want food. At least for a good while immediately post op. It's awfully hard to make these changes with your dear old friend food. I haven't been enjoying it at all. But what I do enjoy is the numbers on the scale that have gone down since surgery. It takes a little while to resign yourself to a whole new life as far as eating goes. There is good news. You will be able to make the changes even though you don't enjoy it. And you'll be able to eat most anything you want at some point, just not a whole lot of it. The benefits of the sleeve far outweigh the difficulties. The choice is yours. Don't fear the changes in eating though. You will adjust and eventually be glad you did it. The hard part only lasts a while. The benefits will last you the rest of your life.

I am enjoying the numbers on the scale right now, I've lost 15 pounds since Monday with this pre-surgery liquid diet...but today is hard, I have almost no energy and I feel so hungry for the first time this week. And I have to watch my husband enjoy food while I eat my Jello and drink my Water. I guess I am just in a sort of funk. It's the "at some point" that I'm not liking...I wish I could just skip to that point now and pass all this liquid and pureed stuff from after the surgery.

Jen, Second thoughts are understandable at this stage, you are taking an irevesible step. I had my doubts too, in fact I almost bolted the morning of surgery!

HOWEVER:

It is really important to reflect on why you are doing this.

For me, I had come to a stage in my life where the future was one of very increased risk of diabetes, stroke, heart attack, disability and poor quality of life.

It was time to accept that all previous weight loss attempts had failed to sustain a healthy weight.

I did it to save my own life.

Good luck.

Do it or don't do it, but be sure to base your decision on facts not fear and be ready to accept responsibility for your decision.

Good Luck!

I'm 100% sure that my second thoughts are fear based. I already have so many health problems because of my weight, which is really sad since I have had them for over 6 years now, and I'm only 30! I was told I would be diabetic within 6 months and that I have a low life expectancy if I don't make some changes. And I am fully aware that EVERY ONE of my previous attempts to lose weight have failed and that this is going to be the best option for me...I'm just scared.

I think the question is which are you more afraid of... losing your old friend (enemy since its killing you) food or having the quality of life, diseases, and early death you just wrote about? I am certainly not being flip about this, I am very serious! Sometimes the known, even when bad , is less scary than the unknown. I th ink most of us have fear but looking back I am so thankful I made this decision! It has definately changed my life and it was so worth it! You are the only one who can make this decision and whatever you choose I wish you the best!! Keep us posted!! :D

Thank you, all, for talking to me through this. I know I am going through with the surgery and that it will change my life for the better...I feel like I'm just in a funk because of this pre-surgery liquid diet. Today I am feeling very lethargic and I've got a grumbly tummy. I'm waiting on UPS to deliver a new Protein Shake powder and I'm hoping that helps because I can't keep down the one I got from the doctor's office. I REALLY hope UPS delivers soon!!!

You can eat around your sleeve, so if you lose a bunch of weight and are desperate to get fat again, there is hope.

Otoh, look at it this way...every meal can feel like thanksgiving feast and be less than half a cup.

I had the same fears, like will eating be some weird, painful, disgusting experience but was pleasantly surprised at how quickly things start to feel normal. everything works as it did before. I'm sure at a year out I wont even know the difference.

If you have any doubts, don't do it. Go to a shrink and work on your food issues first. When you're ready to hit it with xena intensity, it will be time.

I'm just shy of 4 weeks out so my opinion is suspect as I haven't had any stuck or dumping experience yet.

Hang in there:) I'm pre-op but I don't have my surgery date yet and I'm really nervous. I am definitely having surgery and I know why, but I'm still scared. food is my comfort and my drug, so I feel anxious about losing it. But I know this is for the best. I kind of look at the sleeve as my "rehab" and the only way I'm going to kick this habit for good.

I'm not on my pre-op diet yet, but I know that will be very hard. It is probably making you more sensitive and amplifying your fears. But from what I've read here on this site, it's pretty common to be scared before surgery. I hope you feel better soon and I'm right there with you!

I definitely don't want to get fat again! I have just read a lot of stories about how after surgery people don't really like food anymore and I'm afraid that will be me. I absolutely love cooking and feeding other people and I'm afraid that I won't after the surgery and I don't know what I will do with my free time. Even this week, while I'm on the liquid diet, I've been cooking for my husband and making meals ahead to freeze so he has stuff to eat while I'm in recovery. I'm ready to tackle this problem, but I think I've just had too much time to think of all the things that could go wrong!

I still love to cook and have people over! I sit down and eat with them, just not as much as before. This also stops all the tasting while you cook because if you do you are full and cant eat. You adapt :D

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
