It's a good sign. Means you're in ketosis! I chew gum all the time. They just don't want you swallowing it because it could get stuck. I never swallow my gum so I chew all the time. When the bad breath stopped I knew I was in a stall even without getting on the scale. After a few weeks it was back and I was happy again cuz I knew I was losing again! Lol!

I never had bad breath and lost weight steadily. You are not supposed to chew gum not because you will swallow it but because it creates saliva which in turn creates stomach acids and extra air(gas); you don't want this in your tummy.

I know what you mean. I am into my 4th week and it is horrible. I bought mouth spray, mouth wash, I scrub my tongue all the time, bought the wispys (little toothbrushes you carry with you). I am embarrassed. Now that I'm eating real food, the doctor said it should get better - hope so!

I with you on this one!! I don't have a dog, but if I did my breath would be worse than his. My mouth tastes like I ate a big fat turd. And no, I have never really eaten a turd. :D

omg me too! It's the worst. All day I sit and think how bad my mouth tastes. I've never been a big gum chewer but I've been seriously considering it. Anything to get rid of this horrible mouth.

I was told by my surgeon and I've also read on the Internet that if you swallow it, it could cause a small intestinal blockage which would in turn require you to have surgery to have it removed. I didn't even think about the other thing of it creating saliva , etc. I've had no issues with it and my dietician said it was ok to chew so long as its not swallowed. You're lucky to have not had the bad breath :)

I think one of my biggest issues is that it makes everything else taste weird too...ick! Hopefully it will get better once I start with food - which should hopefully be after my follow up tomorrow!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
