Introducing new foods

Recommended Posts

I'm two weeks out, nutritionist wants me to start incorporating new foods. How long till one would know they have an intolerance? Minutes hours?

I started by trying a small bite of something, then I would wait 15-20minutes. If I had no pains or nausea I would warm up the rest of my food and eat. So far I seem to be ok with everything but mashed potatoes. Those were one of the first foods I tried when I could have soft foods but they will not stay down for me.

I did pureed chili last night for my first time which was okay except I ate too fast and felt funny. Trying scrambled eggs two small bites at 815 I think I'm going okay. I know I'm not going to like some things but I am so nervous about how that will feel I swear I make myself sick :P

Just remember that in the beginning it's hard to tell if you are full or not so it really helps if you weigh or measure your food to help keep from overheating. I hated puréed food, so I ate mostly eggs and Protein Shakes till my dr released me for more solid food. The taste wasn't bad, I just couldn't handle the texture of it.

You'll know pretty quick. I'm always amazed at the different reactions and experiences each person has. There isn't a one fits all guideline with the sleeve. It sure would be easier if there were! I can tolerate most anything at this point. I have noticed that a food I've already eaten can switch to being intolerable

sometimes. It's very strange. When something disagrees with me I get nauseous, heart beats faster, get hot or cold, and just have to lay down. Just take your time while eating. Your body will give you a clear signal if it doesn't like it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
