Confused. Do we want to be in ketosis?

Recommended Posts

41 days post op. I've been in ketosis for awhile. Funky BO, can't get this taste out of my mouth...it's aggravating..and embarrassing! Do I want to be in ketosis or should I eat more carbs? How long is it safe to stay in ketosis?

FYI surgery in Mexico so no nut, insurance won't pay for it, don't have the $$$ for it at the moment so wanting to pick the brains of all you knowledgeable peeps :)

The cotton mouth thing is absolutely a sign of ketosis. I had it the entire time I was preop and for the first week or two after surgery.

Being in ketosis is a good thing. It means your body has used up all the sugar stored and is now burning fat for fuel. You can still eat a limited amount of low glicemic carbs and not leave ketosis.

Here are some of the foods I avoid:

1. Carbohydrate-rich vegetables, such as carrots, peas, potatoes and Cereal grains, should be eaten in moderation.

2. High-carb fruits such as grapes, apricots, bananas, olives and peaches, as well as extracts and juices from these fruits, should be replaced with low-carb fruits such as watermelons, strawberries, melons and avocados.

3. Fluids with high carbohydrate contents, such as beers and non-diet soft drinks and beverages, are not recommended for your diet. The high-sugar contents in these drinks will replace fats as the primary energy-producing nutrients, increasing the risk of having more fats in the body.

4. Processed foods, such as most canned foods, have carbohydrate contents that are high enough to disrupt the function of a ketogenic diet. pastas and milk products should also be avoided because they have high carbohydrate contents.

5. Seafoods, such as clams, blue crabs, lobsters, scallops and squids, are low in fats. However, they are rich sources of Proteins and fatty acids.

It would be hard to tell since we don't know what your eating plan is right now. Typically some carbs are okay. Are you tracking what you eat? How much Protein are you getting in? Water? Everyone is different, and everyone's approach to their post-op diet is going to be different. Unfortunately there is no one size fits all when it comes to WLS.

Back in the early days I strived to be in ketosis. I peed on a plastic stick every day to check. When in ketosis I lost weight most rapidly.

Yep, I was stinky breath and cheesy butt, but it was worth it!

I can pretty much eat anything except citrus which I will add in a week and then I'm off any restrictions. I'm eating about 60-65 g Protein and getting about 50 oz of water...still working on that one. I am tracking what I eat with MyFitnessPal and averaging 35 carbs a day. If I eat fruit then it's higher but don't very often. Right now I pretty much just eat all protein (meats, Beans, cheese, hummus). I eat vegs, fruit, and breads sparingly but don't often because of the carbs. Don't know if I should keep it low and stay in ketosis or add more of the other foods and balance my diet. It's hard finding that sweet spot and what works for you. Really hoping my new job will pay for a nut!

Looks like what you are saying is fine. Your weight loss on your sig looks good. I would avoid breads and get the Water up to 64+ that might help, but if you are losing the weight and not stalling out and feel good, I would say keep on keeping on.

I did stall but am out of it now. Losing 1/2 lb a day or so...just thought it would be more than that :)

There will be a time in the future where you will look back fondly at losing 1/2 lb a day and think "wow, those were the best days!". Sounds like you're doing well. Fluids need bumping up, and you'll get there I'm sure.

My numbers were/are very similar to yours, I'm just further along the road. You'll hit lots more stalls in the coming year, just like I have. Keep a close eye on what you're eating (track everything, I use MyFitnessPal), and start incorporating exercise when you feel your ready.

I'm averaging about 2.7 lbs per week now (that includes all the time from 1st day post-op to today) and that number is getting lower as I get closer to goal. But even with stalls (my last stall was for a month, and ended about a week ago), my numbers are still going down and I know I'm going to get to goal and stay there.

Keep up the great work!

Sometimes you can get them at your local drug store. They are used by diabetics to check for the alkalinity of their urine, which lets them know if they are managing their blood glucose correctly or not.

You may need a prescription , or not, based on local/state laws. Check with your pharmacist.

Looks like your loss is going well! If it ain't broke, don't fix it :-) My doc's office advised that number of protein= number of carbs, but since I've been stalled for the past 3 weeks, I'm dropping carbs to see if being in ketosis will help move things along. Good luck and please keep us updated!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
