How Soon Can I Resume My Pre-Sleeve Eating Lifestyle?!?!

Recommended Posts

This is a rant in the truest sense of the word. This is probably the most frustrated you will see me get on this forum. I've been hanging out on VST for almost a year and I am now 3 weeks postop. I'm no expert, but I am a woman with food addiction trying to get healthy.

Some of the questions I've come across blow my mind. Truly. It's not that I don't get this is a journey and a struggle. I do. I get it. I've wanted to lick spoons!

But really?! bread a week out?! Trying to figure out how soon b4 you can get drunk?! Let's eat at McDonalds for Protein? ! I've been sleeved a month, can I get Chinese takeout?! I sure miss bingeing?!?! Pass the box of donuts, it is all I can afford?!?!

Disclaimer: I plan to eat realistically. I know I will eat bread again. I'm sure wine will pass between my lips again. I imagine I will partake in Chinese food, although a buffet would be a total waste. I will sink my teeth into a Boston cream donut. But I'm 3 weeks out. These things are not my priority. And while I won't tell others what their priorities should be, if these are yours you may want to find out why.

I've been tempted to ask my uncle, he is going on two years sleeved, what he can hold comfortably in one sitting max. But when I reflect on why I'm asking that I realize its my addiction wanting to know this. Wanting to anticipate max binge ability. When I read some of the above questions my brain translates it to my subject title: How Soon Can I Resume My Pre-Sleeve Eating Lifestyle?

Maybe I'm wrong/reading more into things, and my emotions and whatnot are getting to me postop.

I really really have to bite my tongue sometimes here. I see people posting crap all the time, don't wanna work out, don't wanna eat right, don't wanna do this or that, I mean come on seriously? Laziness and inability to control eating habits got 90% of us here, yet we're still going to b***h and moan when we've been given this 2nd chance at life. Buck up, put in the work, do what you know you have to do and have success.

Sometimes the frustration, for me, comes from people posting the very thoughts I'm struggling with.

I so agree !!! and also shake my head when reading things like this... I admit.. being almost 6 months out and 70 lbs down... I can eat pretty much anything... but I choose to eat what I eat and WILL NOT go back to where I came from. So I try and make good choices, I exercise and I thank myself for making this choice and going through it to give myself another chance at being healthy and happy.

Did you really say Boston cream donut!!!! Lol I'm 4 months out. I have not cheated because why would I cheat myself. I do occasionally have whole wheat with added Fiber with an egg white (1/2 piece 25 cal) but not daily I don't want the carbs. Some people honestly should have never had the surgery. It's not a quick fix. I will admit I sometime crave really really bad chocolate but I fight it because I'm fighting for my life

My philosophy from the beginning of my journey has been, train like an athlete for the rest of my life. I have food cravings, mostly Protein. My thinking revolves around feeding my muscles, having enough carbs for energy and Vitamin nutrition and fiber for health. The garbage food that is presented to me gets little more than a taste. I am building something here, I have sworn off tearing myself down.

The sleeve was a gift given to me. It cost me $1000. out of pocket and nearly $40,000 was paid by insurance. It was like I was walking to a goal that was impossible to reach and someone came along and gave me the keys to a Rolls Royce. I would be an idiot to not make the most of this.

An alcoholic once told me he used to detox just so alcohol would have a greater effect on him, not to change his life. Get clean, get dirty again.

You might hate being fat but that is not enough. You have to hate living and thinking like a fat person. You must hate the process of getting fat. Stay off that train, find the right one!

Did you not realize that after surgery you would have to eat so different than what you were used too? We must change. The surgery gave us a chance and it is up to us to make it a success. You will never go back to pre sleeve eating. If you do, all that you have been thru will be for nothing. It is all up to you.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but some of the response to the OP's post sound like they think SHE is the one making these crazy comments about when she can get back to pre-sleeve eating life.

No! She's all bent out of shape because OTHERS are posting those crazy things!

I agree with her wholeheartedly. Anyone making those posts either did not do the pre-op research and psychological prep, or are doomed to failure because they think this surgery is the quick fix and they don't have to do any work on their own habits, lifestyle and mindset.

I'm so glad the majority of members of this forum are more educated, Enlightened and motivated to improve their OWN lives, using the sleeve as their tool to achieve their goals!

I know that the sleeve is just a tool. It does not change our thoughts about food. It will not stop you from putting that evil calorie dense food in your mouth. This takes a lot of work psychologically. Most of us on here are addicts and the most tempting foods are foods that have sugar, fats, and salt.......This is what the processed foods delivered to us by manufacturers have targeted people for.........So now our journey is to work on our emotional eating habits and recognize our triggers when they come up to prevent from acting on the triggers. We will gain weight if we eat around the sleeve. I do fall off the wagon and do notice that when I eat a piece of candy, I crave more sugars. I can not stop at one......This is a life time job for all of us.....

I have 'cheated' a few times, but I try to balance that and never go overboard, or make my treats something relatively healthy, like chocolate mousse made from silken tofu, so it has lots of Protein, etc.

I guess my mindframe is that I don't want to go back to my pre-surgery eating habits because I don't want to go back to my pre-surgery body or lifestyle. I will be happier this way. Even if it means a little less instant gratification. If these are thoughts you have frequently, (about bingeing) see a therapist! Having surgery does not stop you from having an eating disorder. You are in recovery, and maybe some help with those urges would be beneficial?

fa·ce·tious [fuh-see-shuhs] Show IPA

adjective

not meant to be taken seriously or literally: a facetious remark.

I knew it was facetious. I like that word although it would have killed me in a spelling bee. :)

I always remembered the spelling because the vowels are in order... Yep, I'm a nerd. ;-)

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
