So since I started my preop diet I have had a horrible taste in my mouth. One morning my sweet 5 year old son son asks "Mom why is your breath so stinky?" I told him I didn't know but that I had a bad taste in my mouth. I have commented a couple of times on this bad taste and my husband will lovingly tell me that my breath is bad. I brush my teeth and use listerine mouthwash regularly but still with little improvement. WHY??? I've never had bad breath for no apparent reason and now it seems like I can't get rid of it. My NUT told me that I couldn't chew gum and I don't think hard candy to freshen my breath is necessarily a good idea. Anyone know what is causing this kickin breath or what I can do to improve it? I've started taking my Calcium and vit D with Breakfast and my Multivitamins at supper instead of alone and that has helped a tiny bit but still... And will it ever get better???

Ketosis. It sucks. I'm in the same boat - my surgery was the day after yours. Everything tastes nasty!

Yup, Ketosis. I have been using the Listerine Breath Strips (very strong, I cut them in half) whenever in public.

get used to taking breath mints, for the first month or so after surgery your breath is horrendous! My hubby had the surgery and I used to make him open the window in the car when he talked :) I am not very nice, but OMG!!!! Mine wasn't as bad, but it was still funky!!!

yep I agree...ketosis. I had mine until about 2 weeks post op. Nasty feel and taste in my mouth. My husband even told me my breath was real bad. It eventually goes away. So hang in there.

Thanks y'all! Sarahboy I told my husband about you making your husband roll the window down in the car and he thought that was hilarious! I would bet he has had the same thought but just never made me! HA HA HA!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
