Blood Clot Prevention Shots

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering if everyone came home with a prescription to prevent blood clots? I didn't but of course I see a handful of people here who did. I wonder if its a certain reason I didn't receive one? Ugh Another thing to worry about!! I cannot wait until tomorrow am to speak with my surgeon! Ugh

Opinions? Thoughts??

My doctor only prescribes the Lovenox injections if you have a 50 bmi or higher. If you are lower than that, perhaps that's why (depends on your surgeon's protocol). Just make sure you walk a TON--at least 10 minutes every hour...I set my iPhone alarms to remind me. And immediately have any calf pain or other unusual pain checked out.

Thanks Tes! That can very well be the reason why he didn't prescribe that med to me. My BmI was about 40. I do walk often and will also set an alarm on my iphone to remind myself. Thanks for commenting! I appreciate it ;)

I was sent home with injections for two full weeks. My BMI was 47. I had no idea I was going to have to do them until I was released.

I do believe I will only have them while in the hospital. Walk a lot! LOL! Let us know what your doc says. :)

Maybe just different doctors protocols then?

Like the gallbladder medications.

By the way I did not have them...

But did get gallbladder meds.

Hi dear. Blood clots isn't an easy subject to deal with on forums. I mean u def need a specialist's opinion because it's life threatening. No one would give you the good advice. Please ask ur surgeon. I'm a low BMI (35) though I was given a single daily shot of LOVENOX during my stay in hospital and it is prescribed for me up to 3 weeks ahead. Sorry for repeating myself but this is serious...PLS TAKE GOOD CARE OF URSELF.

I know! If there is one thing I've learned about this surgery and drs is there are no "set" rules.

Hey Ladies ;)

I had my first appointment with my doctor today. He advised me that he doesn't routinely give the shots unless past medical history warrants it such as blood disorders ect. He encouraged that I walk alot! A Lot! I am only 8 days post op however I have been walking about 2 miles everyday since day 3 and also getting up every hour to do something. Blood clots are just so scary. :( Thanks everyone for commenting. Sorry I am sooo late responding, I for some reason don't get alerts when the threads I create receives a response.

I am down 16 pounds since 4/1, no preop diet just had to do a liquid diet 24 hours before surgery. I look forward to being sucessful as many of u ;)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
