Recommended Posts

My doctor prescribes them for 3 weeks no matter what your bmi. He said it is used as preventative for everyone.

I was just wondering if everyone came home with a prescription to prevent blood clots? I didn't but of course I see a handful of people here who did. I wonder if its a certain reason I didn't receive one? Ugh Another thing to worry about!! I cannot wait until tomorrow am to speak with my surgeon! Ugh

Opinions? Thoughts??

I don't know if my surgeon had a bmi requirement I believe he gives it to all patients. But while in the hospital I was given 2 lovenox shots a day (was there for 4 days). Then came home with a 10 day prescription of lovenox to do at home. So a total of 14 days on it. Hope that helps.

For those of you who had to take it how much does it cost? I have to take them also but my doctor doesn't think its covered by my insurance.

They just released a lovenox generic that with my insurance was 10$. I don't know what is costs without it but I know it's way cheaper than the lovenox. Lovenox I was told is 400$ for 10 days. You can call a pharmacy and ask them how much both are without insurance.

Also you can probably ask you Dr for samples. Let them know your insurance may not cover it. Sometimes they can help you out.

There are pros and cons to the shots and meds so most doctors make it a case by case decision. I actually had a blood clot from the picc line and took the shots for one day, then put the next one in the bed LOL (cuz the damn nurse wouldn't leave me alone about using it) and then talked to the doc and was taken off of them. The clot I had was not dangerous and could be monitored via ultrasound so I did that instead and it went away. The medications can put some people at risk. I do not live the kind of life where I'm not on a ladder or jumping off a wall or running or whatever so the risks for excessive bleeding in an injury over ruled the risk of the clot.

I totally agree that blood clots are dangerous, and each situation should be carefully considered, but I for one do not take a medicine just because they give it to everyone else. I want to know the "why" and then make an informed decision after that. But I want to hear that "why" directly from my surgeon's mouth :)

Lifebacknye7, I was given a month's worth of Comadin. It's a blood thinner to help prevent the blood clots.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
