acid reflux? Awoken with crazy bile in the throat and a runny nose. Advice needed!

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I had my first "solid" meal last night. I had chips, pico de gallo and some tosdada around 7. They didn't have Soup and I was experimenting with solids. Probably not the best choice for a first solid meal (7 pm). For this, I'm already regretting the choice and should have probably stuck with Beans or rice. I was awoken this morning (4:30) after only had gone to bed around 2:45 with a burning in my throat. The bitter taste and burn in my throat literally worked it's way into the storyline of my dream. I immediately thought it was the dreaded "L" word and looked for all the signs and symptoms for leaking. My HR is normal, temp normal, incisions fine. I think I'm in the clear as far as that is concerned.

Is this frothing? My nose is also really runny. Like REALLY runny. I took the Omeprazol 20 (acid reducer) and a bit of milk of magnesia to help a bit and it's seemed to have calmed it down. I still feel the need to clear my throat of the burn and metallic taste and I think I'm still producing some bile. I have the need to cough a bit and my nose just won't quit. My spit is clear and of normal texture and not tinted yellow or red.

Would the body take this long to produce this much stomach acids? I didn't lay down after I ate and it's been hours. Wouldn't I feel the symptoms around 10-12? I'm just scared and I'm starting to feel like a hypochondriac.

Back to pureed Soups and liquids for me. This experience really scared me.

Anyone else have this experience? My friend experiences a runny nose at the time of eating to let her know she's basically to capacity. This is hours and hours and hours later. Also, the Omeprazol usually is after I awaken. This is the first time I've ever had anything like this happen.

Yes! It used to happen to me in the middle of the night. The reflux was tolerable but the metallic taste was truly vile. I would take a Pepcid Complete or two and go back to bed. Has not happened to me for a while though. I think it's fairly common and quite normal.

My dr. told me to avoid rice at all costs because it swells in your stomach. She also put me on Prilosec for 30 days following surgery. I had no problems with reflux so I guess it helped! I was so afraid of hurting my tummy that I was very conservative when I started eating solids. I stuck with potatoes, crackers, Peanut Butter and A LOT of Beans for quite awhile with no problems. Also, a lot of soft meats tuna, fish, and chicken. I am 4 months out and *still* get nervous introducing new foods! Good luck and I hope things improve for you!

I used to have reflux before giving up WHEAT. Since going wheat free haven't had reflux even once... even since being sleeved. The sad things is, When my reflux was really bad before, I'd eat things like pretzels and toast thinking it was going to help me!

I just mention this because if this was your first experience with wheat products after being sleeved then who knows.. could be an issue.. also some people experience problems with other Cereal grains as well (corn, oats, rice)

Just as an FYI: my doctor wanted us on Prilosec for 9 months post op. I take 1!a day and on occasion, take 2 a day. If I miss a daily doze I will notice burning in the throat. You can buy OTC Prilosec, but cheaper to get a prescription for it.

My surgeon prescribed Prilosec twice a day for 6 mos to prevent these problems and allow healing.

Ok, I did some deep thinking and came to the realization that I had a square of chocolate (my first) since surgery and chocolate is one of the most highly acid producing foods. Oy...I think I did this to myself. LESSON LEARNED. At least I'll admit my wrongs and work on them. I really feel uneducated about so much.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
