I've been struggling with this! I'm still pre-op and both my parents know, my dad even went to the seminar and the consult with me, my 2 besties, and my aunt (who had the roux-en-y) and a cousin. Other than that, I've told no one. But I work at a pharmacy and I really don't want my co-workers to know...that's my biggest concern. Idk, what excuse I'm going to give for the off time I'll need to get the surgery or the meds I'll need afterward!!!! SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP ME!!! I'm not that clever when it comes to making things up! Lol

You don't have to lie. You tell your manager you are taking time off. You can tell them you are having surgery they don't have to know what kind. I spent a lot of time worrying about what my co workers when I returned after two weeks. I just told them I needed time to handle some personal business and that was that on that. I did tell my Manager I was having surgery but was not specific and he knows he is not allowed to ask. I also told him I had not told the rest of the team my reason for being out and he said no problem.

Look up "lie" in the search option and you'll find about a hundred threads on this subject.

I'd you were having, let's say, a rectal fistula repair, would that change your response?

You are under NO obligation, moral, ethical or otherwise to disclose your personal health information to anyone! Except your primary medical provider....

My response when someone is bold enough to ask, "did you do IVF?".....perfect strangers, waitresses, etc, is "wow...that's a really personal question."

You get to decide who to tell, regardless of what you'll read on this or any other forum.

First things first, you do not have to lie. You don't have to tell them or disclose exactly why you are off work. You can simply be off due to medical reasons. I work in the pharmacy industry too. You can always go to another store or use mail order to obtain your medication. You healthcare is your business not your colleagues. If you choose to share the information, let it be your choice, because you feel comfortable telling them. If you need to speak with your boss about your medical leave, you can feel comfortable explaining you are having a medical procedure that will have you out for a few weeks to recover. That's it...no more than that unless you feel you want to share. I hope that helps.

I told everyone, as it did not bother me for no one to know. However many people who have WLS also have hernia's (I had one, Dr took out on day of my WLS), so you can say you have to have a hernia removed.. Its just a small fib lol. And if you do have a hernia when the Dr does your surgery and he removes it, than there was no fib at all.. Good Luck!

Lol, thanks so much guys! I know I'm not obligated to tell anyone...but here's the deal, it's only like 15 of us that work there and we're all kinda close! And we talk about a lot if things, we don't even take breaks! Lol, we just all eat right there in the pharmacy, most of the time sharing food and stories. Cuz it's mostly girls, only 2 guys. So they'll DEFINITELY notice the difference and they will ask. I'm just not ready to tell!

The hernia thing will NEVER work! Everyone at my job knows that I don't do anything that will break a nail or ruin a nice hairdo!!! Haha...but that is really common and could work if I wasn't the resident "princess" (their words, not mine)!!!

Again, I say, tell them when you are ready to share. I didn't tell anyone at first, now that I'm 12 days away, I realized I don't mind telling anyone. In my role, I have to wine and dine pharmacist at dinner - it is going to be stranger to see me order Tomato Soup - nothing else (no wine, no bread, no gelato, no steak)....ahhh, this is going to be hard. :(

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
