4 Mths. post op.... How much can you eat?

Recommended Posts

Surgery date 12-6-12, not eating much. food intake has been very hard since my surgery. I feel like at 4 mnths post op, I can only get 1 to 1 1/2 ounces in per meal. I have no appetite and have to force myself to eat. Let me explain, this surgery was a revision (to save my life) from the RNY I had in 2003. I don't remember it being this difficult to eat back then. What is everyone else eating and how much?

My nutritionist wants me eating 1/3 of a cup per meal. 5-6 meals a day, 1100 kcals, 40 grams carbs 80+gms of Protein (basically a 2 to 1 ratio). Depending on the density of the food, I can eat more than a 1/3 of a cup, but try to stay in that range. I too don't really have an appetite and am getting slammed by my nutritionist and my Dr for it. So now I have alarms on my phone reminding when it is time to eat. Actually it has helped some, I probably am getting about 200 more kcals a day in because of it. I was averaging about 700 kcal and have gotten it to around 900. Hope that helps (sleeved 11/20/12)

I was sleeved on 12/13, I eat every 2-3 hours that is the only way I get it all in. But I'm hungry :-(. Wish I wasn't. I eat probably about 3/4 cup of food per serving, hitting about 1000 calories and 100-120 gms of Protein daily. I tend to graze rather than try a full meal.

I am almost 4 months out (on 4/17), and I honestly don't measure many things- I do know that I can eat more than I used to- a 1/4 lb (precooked) hamburger patty I can eat about 3/4 of, whereas just 6 weeks ago I could barely eat half. I do track all of it on MFP, and I eat 900-1000 calories per day now. I guess that hamburger patty after cooking is maybe 3 oz- so 2 oz dense Protein plus some Tomato and baby spinach on top...altogether 3 oz? When I have eggs I have added an egg white to my one whole egg, so that's more-maybe 2/3 cup?

I also sometimes purposely vary my calorie intake- like I will pick 2 days out of the week (nonconsecutive) and eat 1200-1300 calories on those days. I have found it shakes up my metabolism if I'm in a stall.

I am also 4 months out. I eat when I feel hungry and until I'm full. I on average hit between 800-1000 calories per day.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
