BethinPA 305 Posted April 6, 2013 Those of you who were hypothyroid pre-op - were you able to come off of your thyroid replacement medication once you lost a significant amount of weight?
sarsar 824 Posted April 6, 2013 No. Surgery can't fix thyroid problems. We are stuck with those for life! I did have to adjust my medication and now I take less of it. Currently I am having more symptoms so I need to go and get blood work done because I have a feeling I need to have my meds upped again.
Lark0207 0 Posted May 8, 2013 If you have the autoimmune type of Thyroid Disease, it doesn't go away after the surgery, however Sarsar is right in that you have to be re-evaluated. My doctor told me that it is not uncommon to have to have a reduction in the dose following a large weight loss. I have not had my post op Thyroid evaluation yet as I am only 3 weeks out, but I will be going in soon to have the test checked to see where I am.

frumpynomore 204 Posted May 8, 2013 Everyone is correct...the VSG does NOT get rid of Hypo/Hyperthyroidism or Hoshimoto's. In my case the surgery did absolutely nothing to change my medication dosage...I have Hoshimoto's Autoimmune disease.
