I keep reading on here about those who are struggling with guilt when they eat. Until yesterday I was one if those people. I am 6 weeks post op and yesterday we had a family function where everyone ordered pizza. I took a small slice, cut it in half and ate the half, except the back crust (the part where you hold). Afterwards I felt such a tremendous amount of guilt, I was depressed, angry, and frustrated that even after his surgery that food was STILL controlling my emotions. I just want to be normal! Eat like a normal, healthy person and FEEL and look healthy.

Here was my revelation. A healthy, normal person DOES eat a slice of pizza and enjoys it without all the negative emotion attached. Food has no power over me if I don't give it power over me. A small slice of pizza is not a bad choice (as long as its not a trigger food, as long as solids are cleared by your doc, and as long as you eat a normal serving size for your sleeve).

2 months ago I would have eaten 3 slices, maybe 4, with a coke and some garlic knots...so why the heck am I crucifying myself? THAT Is not healthy, not the pizza.

Free yourself. The weight will come off and you will lose the mental heaviness as well.

I can't wait to have a piece of pizza. It is one of my favorite foods. I actually had a craving for cheese fries a few days ago. I had about 4 then stopped. I took the rest to go for my boyfriend. As I carried the container out I thought , wow, this is heavy. I used to be able to eat this. Yuck, what was I thinking!! I am now free of cheese fries perhaps forever!!

That's a good revelation! Funny how we feel about ourselves and our relationship with food, isnt' it? I'm almost 4 months out, and I'm still coming to terms with it, too. We also had a function last night with pizza, and I ate once slice. I also felt a little concern, a)that's too many calories, B) why was I able to eat the whole slice with no problem, and c) should I have eaten it? But, like you, I also decided I could have eaten4-5x that amount before, and would have. I also could have eaten more later in the evening yesterday, and I didn't. So after a little worrying, I think it's OK. I felt elated that I ate way less than the "normal" people did, and even more thrilled that I was satisfied with it!! It's really all I ever used to wish for before I had surgery - that I didn't have this burning drive to eat, eat, eat!

Congratulations on your new found freedom!

Your words were spot on. It is not food that is the culprit, it is the emotions and reasons that food is used that become the downfall. Once those reasons are detached then the choice of what is eaten is changed, it won't bring on the guilty feelings.

I have heard time and again eat to live...not live to eat. So if one day someone chooses to eat a 1/4 piece of a slice of pizza and they are not making a habit of it, why not enjoy it. Even when dieting, it is recommended not to deprive yourself of things enjoyed.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
