It does not pay to be greedy

So, hubby and I go to Wegmans for dinner. It's an upscale grocery store that has a second level for sitting down and eating. They have buffet with all types of food. I got one tiny red skin potato, bourbon chicken thigh, 4 little cubes of tofu, 2 cubes of some type of cheese, some asparagus tips, and a chicken wing drumstick. I ate about 4 pieces of the asparagus (they were about 2" in length and the thickness of a pencil), the cheese, the tofu and maybe 1/5 of the chicken thigh. After dinner we went to Home Depot before going home. Well, once we got home, I wasn't feeling hungry and got greedy for the piece of wing. I took about 3 little bites of it, started feeling discomfort, then started sliming, and out came the food.....still haven't learned how to listen to my stomach :(

I hate it when I get greedy too! I haven't actually thrown up or gotten slimes but I have eaten a little too much or some of the wrong thing and felt so bad I had to go lay down. This learning how to eat thing is a real hassle, But we will learn and move ahead. Sorry you were sick - that sucks.

Been there.

I've got 63 years versus 1 year of programming. My neurons are pretty well hard wired. I have to approach food with brain engaged or Mr. 63 takes over. My sleeve is a huge blessing and it did me a big favor. When I look in a mirror, walk up stairs, put on my pants, hug my wife, and a thousand other things I am reminded what a fat trap I escaped.

It's not much of a burden, then, to pause before food and think it through.

It's not much of a burden, then, to pause before food and think it through.

How do you gauge how much to eat? Do you have a certain volume or calories you use to limit yourself? I am just wondering what the best way is to not go over the line. I am not having to much of a problem but would like to be able to figure out how to stop before the discomfort, It is challenging and my first advice to myself is to eat slower, I seem to think I should eat like I did before surgery.

My nutritionist wants us to get 2 oz of Protein, 1/4 cup of a veggie and a 1/4 cup of a starch. We are supposed to eat protein first then veg then if we are still Hungary have the starch or some of it. I never can finish all of it. Always full before hand. She says the important part is getting the protein in first. Hope this helps.

Greedy seems to be my middle name. Once I was able to eat, it was like I was getting back into my old eating habits - but couldn't. I'm still not able to judge precisely what I can and can't eat, but I'm getting pretty good knowing when I should stop and when I don't I pay the price. It is going to come up or sometimes I'm so uncomfortable that I make it come up. (sorry for the gross visual). I still seem to crave the foods that I shouldn't eat and some foods I've learned by experience to stay away from. Sometimes it's hard to know what is going to work or not. I'm still in the experimental stage of eating. In the last two weeks it's been really difficult. I have been thirsty a lot and have been trying to try different beverages to quench the thirst (I also hate Water and I get tired of drinking water or related products). I would die for a soda, but for someone reason sodas are one of the things that I've been afraid to try since sleeved. Good thing I think. However, there have been a lot of foods that I have been able to eat - but I pay the price later. Not really a good way to go about this thing.

I do not count calories but I have the utmost respect for those who do. I have counted calories and carbs and Fiber and Protein so much in my myriad past diets that I can pretty well tell what I have in front of me.

If you are really tuned in to your eating and not distracted by TV, talk, movies, etc. there is a place that I call the "sweet spot". It starts when your belly warns you that you are closing in on the limit.....yellow light...time to slow down. It's 1 or 2 bites more time. Sometimes my mind says,"Aw..not yet...this stuff is too good!" If I keep on going the pleasantly full feeling turns to stuffed. If I still keep on going stuffed turns to miserable. Beyond that my belly gives me an instant replay in reverse of what I just ate.

Your docs advise about eating slowly is the right advice. I would add eat thoughtfully. Keep your mind on what you are doing. Let your belly talk to you.

Thanks for your words of wisdom. It is good advise. I sometimes wonder if I have the restriction others have because I think I am eating more than I should be able to without pain or getting sick. That's why i was curious about how much you can eat and how you know when to stop.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
