Anyone else need medication for nerve pain?

Recommended Posts

I am a little over 2 weeks out from surgery and starting yesterday I have had burning pain at my largest incision. It's not the incision itself because that has healed up well. My surgeon prescribed a medication for nerve pain called Gabapentin. Anyone else experience this?

I'm on Gabapentin for neuropathy in the lower legs and feet. I was also taking this post surgery as well, It doesn't help with the incision pain. In fact it doesn't help a whole lot for the neuropathy. Google it, it's prime function is for seizures.

My NP just told me about this on Thursday. She explained that it is common to have pain, pulling, tingling etc in your larger incision (that's the one that they pull your stomach out of) as the nerves regenerate. She told me to call if it gets bad, and that we could try Gabapentin if needed. She also said that Lidoderm Patches help. They are a bit pricey with insurance, you know that 3rd tier medicine having the highest co-pay thing. BTW Gabapentin is a great medicine for nerve pain, few side effects, well tolerated by most people and inexpensive. It's used for nerve pain as well as seizure control. I have been on it for several years for fibromyalgia, but have not taken it since surgery. Hope you feel better soon!

Please research that medicine and see if potential side effects are worth it... It may or may not help. It's a narly drug!

Try solarcain (sp?) spray. It's cold and has some lidocaine in it. . Helps with my neuropathy in my toes when I can't sleep and there are no side effects and it's cheaper!

I had this, too. Bending, sneezing or coughing was a death sentence! The only thing that helped w/the pain & burning was REST.... Take your walks, but no housework.... It got better 3-4 wks after surgery..... Hang in there!
