Recommended Posts

Hello there!

How soon after surgery do you guys start to exercise? I want to exercise ASAP! I'm hoping exercising and toning will help prevent some loose skin!

Hopefully your doctor gave you a reccomendation on how long to wait after surgery to exercise... I was told to walk, walk, walk... but as far as lifting weights, I had to wait at least 30 days to lift 20 lbs. So I began my exercise regime of cardo walking right away... as I felt up to it.. then about 1 1/2 - 2 months later started working out with a personal trainer 3x a week.

My doctor told me that for the first two weeks he wanted me taking short frequent walks but beyond that he wanted me on the couch resting.. no long shopping trips, no brisk walks for exercise.. After two weeks he said I can walk as much as I want and briskly if I feel comfortable but no jogging (yeah, like THAT'S going to happen anyway) and no gym.

He said after 6 weeks I can do equipment/classes at the gym and at 8 weeks I can go in the pool.

Walking was an option early on but as I was weak all the time, I didn't get much in.

I was cleared at 4 weeks to do whatever I wanted. I now walk on treadmill and light weights. Planning on getting a trainer to get the most results. It is pretty costly at my gym though. Thinking of switching membership to the Y.

But whatever you do, don't overdo it. I lifted my case of Water yesterday and kind of felt a pull. Do what you can, when you can.

I was also cleared at four weeks to do whatever I wanted: Water aerobics, weight lifting, jogging, running, whatever. However, I had a perfect recuperation, no problems whatsoever. Your doctor is the best judge of your situation.

My Dr. has restrictions for 4 weeks light cardio, 6 weeks whatever I wanted, however my PA cleared me at 4 weeks via video conference as long as nothing felt bad.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
