Upper Gi results not good!

Recommended Posts

So I'm almost 5 months post op and have been having acid reflux since I was moved to solid foods. I had an upper GI my sleeve is perfect doctor told me that he secretly was hoping that I has a stricture that could have easily been fixed and not a weak esophageal sphincter. turns out that when your stomach is cut out there is a portion of that sphincter that is cut away sometimes. Well that just weakened my already damaged esophageal sphincter more :( so now I can do a gnarly trick, if I bend over after I eat it will all come up.. Sucks I tell ya.. For now I'm being treated with acid reducing meds and time to see if my symptoms get better as I drop more weight. Worst case scenario I would have to be converted to bypass to fix my acid problems.. Anybody else on here that can relate to my story..

I have horrid reflux, I will trade it for the 120# any day. Mine is similar-- its a side effect, and beats the heck out of the band. For me-- the band stopped my reflux. I'm 6 mos out, and had reflux the first week or two post op, similar regurg-- can't lay down within 2 hrs, best not to bend over. I had reflux pre band so its just part of my life. I take zantac or axid twice daily (h2 blockers) and a PPI- protonix or prilosec every day. Honestly preband-- "its because your fat",now at goal wt 130#--- no pressure on my belly--- it just is. I just treat it, eat small- if I don't eat its worse, I drink a lot of milk, keep nut /rice crackers or almond butter on me 24/7. Good luck to you !

I am an RN and one of our surgeons (actually is my Bariatric Surgeon) has just applied and started performing a new procedure called a LINX procedure. It is a Bracelet of magnets that they insert around the sphincter of the esophagus that opens to let food go down but will not let anything come back up. You can google it and look into it. It has been very successful so far and it sure would beat having to go to gastric bypass, which in my opinion is an extremely dangerous surgery. The LINX procedure is done laprascopically. I'm sorry you are having so much trouble.

Sorry you're having this problem. Doesn't sound like much fun. I am pre-op band-to-sleeve. Is this a common side effect for sleevers or even just converters? Do you know?

This is a side effect that can happen especially if you have suffered from reflux in the past there is a good chance that it will get worst. I still don't regret having the lap band out and being sleeved in going to be an acidy skinny b***h soon lol

Lol.. acid queen skinny b***h !

I never had reflux till the lapband and then it was part of my life in band hell only I was still obese! It took me a long time to accept that it might get worse post sleeve.. but i finally decided it was worth the risk. Thank my lucky stars I am reflux free...but as a skinny b***h I too would say it is worth the risk.

My reflux got way way worst with sleeve and I am 9 mths out and still have it. If I eat to close to bed I have very bad Reflux almost to point if choking a few times on it. Very scary stuff. I am in Prilosec twice a day. I do sleep on a wedge pillow and that has seems to help. My doc did say by pass was option. But. Just can't do it. I will repeat an endoscopy in a year to make sure my reflux has not caused damaged. As my surgeon said long turn un controlled reflux can lead to esophageal cancer. Mine according to my gi doc was a side effect of the band. It stretched out the upper part of my stomach. So says my sleeve is deformed and I had a pouch on upper part of sleeve and that food sits there. Do I refer sleeve hell no. I can eat normal again. Just sad that I have this problems and worried about my future. I read in a post about wheat beinf a problem and causing reflux. I had not heard of that. Anyone?

I'm having an endoscopy to check on my esophagus but currently I'm on carafate and Prilosec I'm waiting on a acid blocking med to be approved by my insurance but the side effects of that are not the best so I will see how long I can take it for.. I'm optimistic. That my issue will resolve itself I certainly don't want a bypass. My doctor mentioned that they can do a laparoscopic procedure in which they strengthen the esophageal sphincter not sure all that's involved but we will discuss if I'm a candidate when I have my endoscopy..

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
