taurabird 142 Posted April 2, 2013 I finally got the results of the Manometry test this morning and scheduled my date. Dr Jawad only does sleeves on wednesdays and the earliest that I can get scheduled is June 5th! I am excited and disappointed at the same time.
southernsoul 773 Posted April 2, 2013 What's a manometry test? I am planning for June 19, so welcome to the June-ers!
taurabird 142 Posted April 2, 2013 Thank you! Go Juners! Manometry is where the put a thin tube down your esophagus to read the pressures where your stomach meets it to make sure the valve there is strong. I guess some people have a weak valve that doesnt stand up to the pressure of the sleeve and it causes intense acid that cant be stopped. My doctor just does it as a precaution since he had one person that it was so bad he had to convert her to bypass. 2 TheOldMeAgain and southernsoul reacted to this

Oakleygirl 53 Posted April 2, 2013 What do you mean "the pressure of the sleeve"? Does having a sleeve exert more pressure on the valve than the normal stomach? Just curious... never heard of this before....
taurabird 142 Posted April 2, 2013 I was told by the doctor that the sleeve does have more pressure because it fills up volumn wise more than a normal large stomach would on a regular basis. Imagine the fullest you have ever been in your life that is what he described it to be like normally after the sleeve. 1 Oakleygirl reacted to this
capeciw 18 Posted April 3, 2013 Congrats on your date and for the jnfo!! Also the stomach naturally "relaxes" when you begin eating. Your sleeve is tighter and will not do that anymore- this can cause more acid issues for some people. I haven't had reflux at all and feel very fortunate. For me, the full feeling is nothing like the full feeling before I was sleeved. It is a very different sense of pressure vs. feeling like I over ate. 2 Vegasme and taurabird reacted to this
Newme48 104 Posted April 3, 2013 Congrats on your surgery date. I would make the most of the time you have by getting used to no drinks with your meals. Even 30-45 minutes before and after meals. Shop around for full liquid items, buy a food scale. Get your Protein Shakes or powders stocked. Strength train to build up more muscle, etc. this will help make things easier after your surgery. The no drinking with meals was especially hardest for me. Good luck to you it will go fast!! 2 southernsoul and taurabird reacted to this

taurabird 142 Posted June 6, 2013 My surgery went off without a hitch yesterday! The NG tube was removed yesterday afternoon and it looks like I will be able to go home later today after they are sure I am tolerating fluids and after they remove the JP drain. I passed the leak test this morning!!!!! 3 miss_cee85, CCRNonherway and Oakleygirl reacted to this
ElaineB 207 Posted June 15, 2013 How are you doing? I'm having surgery with Dr. Jawad in July, I hope. I had no idea he put in an NGUYEN tube. Why on earth does he do that? You can stay hydrated with IV and I can't imagine Protein is that critical in the hospital. It's freaking me out.
taurabird 142 Posted June 15, 2013 Elaine, so happy to meet someone on here that is local! Dr Jawad is great, not much in the personality dept but he was awesome after surgery and I could tell he really does care. The NG tube is to decompress the stomach for the first several hours after surgery ansnto make sure that you are not bleeding inside the stomach. They took it out about 5 hours after I got to my room and it really wasnt bad at all ( no pain ).
taurabird 142 Posted June 15, 2013 U will only be given ice chips until the next morning when they do the leak test around 7am. After that you will be free to have Clear Liquids. Then around noonish they pull the JP drain and as long as you are tolerating the fluids you will be sent home that afternoon. I think I left around 4pm. taurabird 142 Posted June 15, 2013 Also he does something really special to keep the nausea down, it is something worn on your wrist called Reletex, kinda looks like a watch. Once you are out of surgery they turn it on and it sends little electrical signals through your wrist that counteracts the nausea signals to the brain and boy does it work. I used it for the first 2 days solid and then off and on for the first week. It can be turned off and on and they give you a little black tube of gel that goes on as a thin layer between your skin and the wrist strap so it works properly. It was a lifesaver at home.
