Gastric sleeve in NZ?

Recommended Posts

Hey all

Caught up with my surgeon today and have been out on the pre-op diet tomorrow and surgery possibly in 3 weeks. Am really nervous but excited for the new chapter.

Any feedback or ideas to help me through?

Ps: am also new to this app :-)

Hi Rayna,

I too am new to this app so trying to find my way around.

I'm in N.Z as well. Auckland. I'm about to start my pre-op diet this Thursday. My surgery date is 18th of April. I'm feeling nervous and excited. Not looking forward to post surgery though

Hi Jadine

How do you feel about the sleeve? How much are you needing to lose?

Why are you not looking forward to post surgery?

Would be great to get some more local input :-)

Cheers

Hi FeelsMe2

Thanks, have you had the sleeve? How was your experience?

Cheers

Hi Rayna

I guess its the recovery period that I'm not looking forward to. I met someone who had the sleeve 2 years ago and had problems ever since with constant vomiting and can only eat dry crackers. Very under nourished. I know everyone has different experiences and I don't want to dwell on that. I guess it goes with making the decision to have the surgery, whatever the outcome we have to live with it!

I start pre surgery diet tomorrow. What joy - Meal Replacement shakes and steamed veges. Mmmmm can't wait !!!

He's a superstar so dont be nervous. I felt pretty damn yuck for 3 days no pain but nausea but after that good as gold. Pain is gain in this case :) and once u get past pre-op and puree stage its awesome.

What does your pre-op diet involve and how long are u doing it for? Pre-op is the hardest part about the whole process - it gets easier!!

I have lost 37kgs and I'm 5 months out on the 6th of April. Just 12kgs to go and I'm at my goal weight. I'm 5'9 so carry weight well with my height ... already people call me "skinny". So really happy with my choice. I was self-pay and its worth every penny :)

I used Optifast branded shakes. strawberry and chocolate arent bad. U can buy them online. The bars, Soups and Desserts were foul. So I would make weight watchers zero point Soup or just stir fry veggies on my pre-op diet. Then post-op I lived on low cal Soups - Tomato, pumpkin etc and shakes and weight watchers zero point jelly and cordials for 3 weeks then went to puree stage.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
