Surgery Date : 2/20/13

Hospital stay : 4 days due to complications

Since my surgery I have had multiple colds, sore throats, a terrible cough (that i can not get rid of), diarrhea, vomiting, and fever. So for the last 6 weeks I have been sick with something. I have tried multiple medications but nothing seems to be working. I called and spoke with my doctors nurse and they were not too concerned with my health (stating that surgery will not make me sick). So if surgery doesn't make me sick then what did because I wasn't sick any this season before my surgery. So my question is, have any of you experienced this? If so what did you do? I'm to the point that I hate going out in public because I know I'll end up sick... :(

While the surgery itself shouldn't be making you sick. The change in diet as a result of the surgery can effect your bodies ability to fight illnesses. It is very important to get your Vitamins and Protein in early so you can rebuild your immune system. Sorry it's been so difficulty for you, hopefully it gets better. Good Luck.

This sounds similar to something my mother-in-law had in the fall. She hasn't had WLS or anything, but she was sick... So so sick. Cough, diarrhea, vomiting... She couldn't keep anything down, not even Water. She was so dehydrated her urine was nearly brown in color. Her doctor didn't really offer any help, so after a month, she finally broke down and went to the ER. If nothing else, at least they could give her fluids. They did all sorts of test, ran a swab very deep up her nose to check for flu... and nothing. Everything came back normal! She finally kicked it a few weeks later. Hang in there. The ER is always an option though.. maybe they could do some cultures and see if you have some sort of virus. Good luck, I hope you start to feel better!

Our new diet is very different and I got really sick with some kind of virus about two months out. I was so hot and tired and my everything hurt. I really had to take a few days and stay in bed with lots of fluids. Not so much protien but Water and juice and tea. I slept as much as I could and showered often to warm up because I was sooooo cold. ( I still get really cold) Depending on how far out of surgery you are I would try some dayquil and nightquil to sleep. Good Luck!

Your doctors office are not very kind. Of course you got sick. You had surgery in flu and cold season. You were in the hospital where the worst of it is. Your immune system is way down because of surgery. Then you spend avdaynor two in the hospital that is inundated with sick people

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
