So, I posted this in the June 2013 Thread, and then realized that those guys haven't been through this either...duh. :)

I am looking at having a VSG on June 3 (hopefully). I super excited and have read a lot and watched so many video blogs that I can't begin to count. Many of them talk about how difficult it is to get your water/protein in for weeks after surgery. June is baseball season around here (and it is HOT) and I have an avid baseball player who will be in a tournament the weekend of June 22nd. How in the world do I prevent dehydration if I can't drink water/Gatorade like usual? I'm an avid baseball mom! I don't mind missing a practice, but I don't want to miss his games!! (On the flip side, I also don't want to end up in the hospital with dehydration...). Thoughts?

I really think you will be ok if you just keep sipping. I carry a Water bottle with me everywhere I go. As long as its with me, I remember to drink from it every few minutes. I can now "chug" 4 - 5 ounces at a time when I'm really thirsty, like after a workout.

Good luck with your upcoming surgery. Surgery is one of the best things my husband and I have done for ourselves. You will quickly learn what you can and can't tolerate.

Not everyone has problems drinking after surgery. I never had any difficulty getting my fluids in. The problem is usually related to the amount of swelling inside, and can sometimes be helped by drinking some warmer beverages earlier on to reduce the swelling. At the 3 weeks you would be at based on your posted time line I would think you should be ok barring any unforeseen complications.

I think you will be ok. I carry a water bottle with me at all times, and just sip, sip, sip throughout the day, it def helps.

Thanks so much! I am so excited! But I am such a planner that sometimes it causes me extra anxiety. Lol. Good to know that I can likely still do it all! :)

We are baseball people, too, but I just bring a route 44 sonic cup full of their ice and chomp chomp. Sipping has always been easy for me, too.

A week after surgery - I had to take 4 iv bags of Fluid in my dr's office. My surgery date was March 6; I can barely get 1/2 of my fluids. I hate Water, plus I get a really full feeling in my throat & chest, a tightness.

but...like people have posted here...many have NO trouble at all get in the fluids. I just saw a post where a lady got in 80 oz Water the very next day after surgery..

Good luck to you.

Just make sure you take Water with you and remember to drink it. I live in AZ and it was pretty warm after I had surgery. But also my body temp changed and I was cold a lot, so no sweating which is how you lose Water. Even if its hot you should be good to go and I also agree with the other poster who said not everyone has a problem with drinking water. I never had any issues. Water was easy and still is easy for me to drink with no issues.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
