Nerve damage near incision site

Recommended Posts

Hi folks.

I got my sleeve a few weeks ago on 3/14 with Dr. Aceves.

One of the incisions was vertical and inside my navel, on the upper part of it. It's pretty much all healed up now but I'm finding I have a mixture of both numbness and sharp tingling nerve pain near it. (note this is one of the small incisions, not the big stomach-pully-outtie incision)

On an area of my stomach, to the side of my navel about 3"x3", I have total numbness. I've closed my eyes and poked around there with a q-tip and it's dead, I have a total loss of sensation. Outside of that numb area I now have strange tingling nerves that freak out and twinge every now and then.

Anyone else experience anything like this?

I did not have that with this surgery but I have with others and it eventually straightens itself out. It takes quite a long time though. I had sinus surgery 10 years ago and where they made the incision over my eye was across a nerve. The feeling came back in about a year but it has been almost 20 years and anytime my sinuses get irritated, there is an invisible line up my forehead that itches and it goes into my hair. It will drive you crazy. The nerves that are cut may act a lot of different ways but it is nothing to be concerned about. :)

I'm numb from the largest incision where they pulled my stomach out of all the way to my navel.. about 5"x4".. Same thing happened when I had my gallbladder out too... but I started slowly getting the feeling back after 6 months or so.

Your nerves will eventually "figure" it out - but you coould retain some nubness indefinately. My appendix scar is over 30 years old and I still cannot feel the actual incision.

Nekobasu! I love Miyazaki. :)

Ahem. Topic.

After my C-section, I was numb from my bellybutton down for about five years. After a while, I got feeling back to about halfway between my navel and my hipline, but I still feel mostly pressure in that space. That was 16 years ago. I don't think I'll get much more back. I'm just really careful in that space, because I'm also prone to skin yeast infections there under my pannus already.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
