Banded for 16 years!!!

Recommended Posts

I met a woman today who told me she got banded 16 years ago. She has a non adjustable band, no port or anything. She lost 130 pounds and kept it off until a few years ago when she had a bad car accident and badly damaged both knees. She's currently recovering from her second knee replacement. She's heavy but not morbidly obese. She attributes her weight gain to lack of exercise due to her knees and her love of chocolate. She still pb's when she's not careful.

The Lap Band by Inamed hasn't been around that long, but I have heard of the old non-adjustable one. I haven't heard of one that's 16 years old, though! Cool!

I don't know if it the same woman or not, but I met a woman in September at the Richardson surgery center who had her band for a similar period of time. She had her surgery in France in 1991 and her band was non-adjustable and had no port.

She was at the surgery center with a friend who was having lapband surgery that day.

Well that cool to hear. Isn't that band what they used when they stapled stomachs?

We are so lucky to have the modern band!

Sounds like the VBG (vertical banded gastrectomy?). That surgery had a lot of regain.

Exactly - anyone who was banded 16 years ago has nothing like our band. People often tell us 'Oh I had that same band surgery 20 years ago" - but it's a common mistake on their part.

The non-adjustable band isn't new or unique.

It's an older surgery, older procedure - and they are many of them around. Nor were they done Laproscopically very often back then. So the current LapBand (which has improved in technology & technique, since I got my LapBand 5 1/2 yrs ago) is light-years away from the non-adjustable one, which has significant complications & regain.

Like all technology, things improve - ten years from now maybe there will be something newer and hipper than the LapBand. For now, I'm keeping my fingers crossed....

I didn't say she had a lap band, just that she was banded, as it wasn't done laparoscopically back then. However she does indeed have a horizontal placement like the newer bands and her band rules (and problems) are the same. She underwent fluoroscopy a few months ago, while having reflux problems, and said she was pleased to see that it is still in it's proper place.

She had the procedure done in Vancouver.

I find it encouraging that the early version is still working for some people. She said that her life would be very different without it.

Devana -

Awesome story. Thanks for sharing. And yes, it is amazing that she was banded 16 years ago and that antiquated technology (smile) is still working for her.

It's probably the Vertical Banded Gastroplasty (VBG) -- part surgery; part band; no port. And, it's still being done: http://www.drchampion.com/vbg.php

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
