Dr. Gerald Kirshenbaum - Considering Dr. Kirshenbaum

Recommended Posts

Thanks everyone for the Birthday wished.

Lap, I am watching the news as well, and wishing you good vibes... Let us know if there is anything we can do.

I was pretty scared abt getting my tattoo, my sis went with me and had to hold my hand through most of it. I was better when I sat p and watched him do it. But I love it and it has so much meaning to me that it made it all worth it. I never thought abt putting one at my port site that is a cool idea, I might have to borrow that Lap.

Oh yeah.....very pretty tattoo!

Hey All.....quick update from me...

I hiked my first 14er (Mountain higher than 14,000 ft) yesterday. It was supposed to be one of the easier 14ers...but it's the craziest, hardest thing I've ever done. THere is no air up there. I was amazed at how well I was able to climb to the top...the guy and girl I was hiking with were having a very hard time. I didn't have any problems until I got to the top and was sitting on the summit for a few minutes. Started to feel really dizzy....so we headed back down and I was crazy dizzy and shakey all the way down and for several hours afterwards. So I basically think I just got altitude sickness. I am so proud of myself for completing the hike and I am excited to do another one. I thought I would be crazy sore today but I'm just a little sore in the calves...I guess all of the hiking I did this summer paid off and was good conditioning. I'll post some of the pics from the hike soon.

Denise...happy, happy birthday girl! You look fantabulous! Missed you at RR.

Lap...I am heading to Clearwater Beach (near Tampa) on Wednesday for business. Do you know if the hurricane is supposed to be in at area? I'm worried about you and praying for everyone's safety.

Adork...What agency to do you work for? My sister lives in PHX and works for Maricopa County SO. I go down there periodically to visit her. Maybe next time, you and I can meet up?

Dee, Mal, Bookholder and Denver....It was great to meet up with you at RR. Denver...I am very excited for you and will be here to support you on your new journey.

There were a bunch of other posts that I was going to reply to but I am running out of time. I hope everyone is well.

Woohoo!!!! Congratulations! You did it!:):thumbup::rolleyes:

Yep, I'll bet it was altitude sickness. Not a pleasant feeling . . . can't wait to see your pics. You must be in such great shape!

I am back and realize that I need this support. I am at the same weight loss that I was 6 months ago. Maybe more fit, and definitely happier (in my heart with my new man). But I realize when I read the postings that I wanted that lapband to make me NORMAL, so my approach to food has been from an obsessive perspective and not a nutritional one. I decided not to really focus on food, portions and eat whatever my body wanted, like a NORMAL person would. Which was ice cream, cake, etc. Which isn't like a NORMAL person would. I chose foods that would go down easily without much of a chew. So the result was probably less food, but more calories.

I keep fighting the concept of what I consider "rigid" dieting, yet my alternative is lousy nutrition. Is there anyone else out there with this dilemma? It is really crazy thinking. Or like AA calls it Stinkin' Thinkin'.

Hugs to all,

Michelle

Thanks gals for still wanting me around, even if I I might not be the best role model for the band...whaaaaah for me..LOL

Anywhooo, I love you all too much to NOT post...tee-hee

Happy Bday oh HOT one! The tat is intense, the initials??? yours?? your mother's? Did you know we are having a Tattoo convention here in Colorado in September? Starts the 19th check it out www.denvertattooconention.com~ they do become a little adicting...am thinking about going, should be interesting and if the urge hits me, then what a better place to get another one???

Deb~All my love to Tucker, he is very fortunate to have such a wonderful human in his life, bless you and bless Tucker.

Life~Congrats on the 14er. You are amazing! I am registered for the Race for the Cure, I am still planning on running it this year...I hope, I hope, I hope! I can see myself running slower than most walk, but what the hell, a slow run is still a run, right?

Dee~You go girl! I love how you are so true to yourself and determined. I wish I had more people like you in my life. I wish I had more of Miss Dee in my head! Can you hypnotise me?

Denver~I agree, fear can be expressed in so many different ways. My boys (18 & 13) were really quiet about the surgery. They knew it meant a lot to me, so they wouldn't express their fears. They would just not talk about it, I took it like they didn't care, but now I realize they were scared.

We are here for you, we know what your are going through, we know how you feel. Come here, I promise to post (LOL). Your new life is just days ahead! We are all excited for you and we are here to hold your hand throughout the process!

Do you have any ideas as to what would be a good gift to take to my friend in the hospital? I am nervous about bringing the wrong things. a hat, a shirt...I just din't know. My son says to bring a CD of his fav band. I just thought you would have some good ideas. Thanks

Lap~I am watching the storms closely and praying for all! Thanks for the support girly! I can't wait to see you again, you have such a great charisma about you. Your zest is contagious and I enjoy being around you! Hope to see you in November.

I am just going to have to try and post more often, I can't remember half of the responses I wanted to post after reading them...

I gotta run, we are going to the CU/CSU game today.

Dynamo!!!!

Hey, I miss you! I am pretty much in the same boat...I keep losing and gaining the same few pounds. It has been frustrating for me. I still work out. I run everyother day with cicuit training and walk on the the off days. I don't eat as much as I did before, I make the wrong food choices a lot. Stinkin' Thinkin, yes for sure! Lets stop it now and move ahead in our journey! I was just looking at our pictures from a year ago and I was thinking about you. I was trying to remember the drive that I had back then, the desire to lose this extra weight. I am going to go back and read some of my firsts post, maybe that will take me back??

I am gald that you posted. Welcome back.

Life, Sorry I missed you too, it was my only night home this week and I had to take advantage of it. Maybe we can do lunch again soon? Would love to catch up.

Mal, The initials are both of my parents that have passed away. I wanted them to always be with me and what better way right?

Dynamo, I have the same problem choosing foods that are right for my nutrition I always go for the stuff I know I can get down. I am tight right now for some strange reason (stress maybe) and that affects how I eat, because I have trouble getting stuff down. Hang in there, it has to get better and we all have to help each other try to make the right choices.

Lifesaver: It's windy but no high tide cresting the sea wall.

Clearwater Beach should be lovely but the sand might sting your eyes from the wind.

Watch HANNA which is coming in on the other coast. We should be getting feeder bands from that one which will bring wind and rain on and off but might effect the flights.

Prty, you are doing so great to be exercising regularly. I am proud of you, and you're right, everybody is at the gym to do their own thing. Geez with ipods and everything, you hardly even talk to other people there. Who cares if you're not a swimsuit model (yet!)

Mal, I never saw your before photos, but you sure look fantastic now. Hang in there and keep doing the right things.

Denver, You're so sweet to say, "Yet!" In reference to our kids, I think you and I are pretty fortunate. I have a really good friend who is obese and her kids are just downright hateful to her. They are always asking her why she's so fat! She cried a lot. I can't believe it when I hear them talk to her that way. Once I corrected her son and told him how hurtful he was being. He just rolled his eyes at me.

The first gathering...here we go Mal.

That's left to right: Anita, Mal, Michelle, Patty (me)

Patty! You guys are goofs! Were you drinking something other than Water? I can't believe the differences in your faces! Mal! Anita, Michelle! and You!

I've been praying for all of you over there in Gustov's way. Let us know how it's going! I hope Hanna doesn't give too many problems.

Mal, The initials are both of my parents that have passed away. I wanted them to always be with me and what better way right?

I Love Your Tat!!! That is so sweet and loving of you to remember your parents that way! Good for you!
Dee~You go girl! I love how you are so true to yourself and determined. I wish I had more people like you in my life. I wish I had more of Miss Dee in my head! Can you hypnotise me?

Do you have any ideas as to what would be a good gift to take to my friend in the hospital? I am nervous about bringing the wrong things. a hat, a shirt...I just din't know. My son says to bring a CD of his fav band. I just thought you would have some good ideas. Thanks

You know Mal, I think, I'm still in my honeymoon phase. I'm on the Detox diet now and doing well, but I refuse to weight until the 21 days is over! I've lost 1 inch from my waist and I've only been on it 6 days! I have been looking into Body4Life. I need to start using weights and being more diligent about that! I'm good with my cycling and swimming, but it's time to mix it up a bit!

I think your son is right about getting your friend a CD of his fav band. It's a great idea, actually and I would say go for it. Maybe several CD's.

I am back and realize that I need this support. I am at the same weight loss that I was 6 months ago. Maybe more fit, and definitely happier (in my heart with my new man). Sister Michelle!! I'm so happy to know your heart is happy! It makes me smile! You're missed every month at RR and every day here online! You guys were my rock when I first got banded. You embraced me into your group and gave me the encouragement during a very rough time! I will forever be grateful!

Shelbi- Thanks for the concern. I don't like taking meds (ok, yeah, I do, but only the ones that make you feel "good' if you know what I mean...not the ones that just kill pain, where's the fun in that?) so I've only taken one Naproxen since I saw the doc. Pain comes and goes and seems unrelated to any type of activity or time of day. I feel just fine standing or sitting, but on the stairs is a whole 'nother ball game! I managed to do go up some stairs today with NO PAIN (I figured I was doing God's work so maybe God was helping me out.). It's still all so baffling....

Thanks for all the concern.

before being banded, I took Naproxen regularly... always with food. I do think it's a good drug and it really worked well for me. Believe me, I needed all the help I could get to make it through my 12 hours shifts! don't be afraid to take it if you need to.

It was great seeing you too! Rene! You're my hero! I am so proud of you! You must be in better shape than you think! That's quite a feat! Congrats, Girlie! Are you going to venture out to another 14er?

Mal,

He's likely to be in the hospital for a while, and a lot of patients like to decorate their rooms so they feel more at home. I would suggest posters that he can put either on the ceiling or on the walls. Stuff like action shots of sports he likes, or of course, girls! Don't worry, we can give you nursing tape that holds, but won't take the paint off the walls.

I'm not sure about CD's, most kids seem to use ipods mostly.

The teens like to wear t-shirts of their favorite teams. Get a size bigger than usual if he has an abdominal brace.

Other ideas would be cans of his favorite soda, or a basket of his favorite snack foods that he can keep in his room for when his new friends (other patients) come by.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the words of encouragement.

Rene,

A 14er? You amaze me - that is fantastic! At this point I can't imagine even driving up a 14er.... how is your shoulder doing from the biking spill?

Lap,

thanks for sharing those old photos. Wow, what progress everyone has made. So encouraging!

Can somebody teach me how to "multi quote"? I tried clicking on that button, but nothing seems to happen when I go to reply.

It is storming in Denver. So much for my plans to cook out on the grill! Hmmm...must find a way to grill eggplant indoors.

Oh, one more question. I did find the slimfast low carb at Walmart, 4 cans for $6.00, but realize if I'm going to be doing this long term, the pre made cans are not very economical.

So, what Protein Powder do you all like best? I looked on another post, and it seems the GNC whey Protein is popular. Dr. K seems to stress a low carb diet long term, so I'd like one with low cal, high protein, and low carb.

thanks!

I would just add another flower or petal if my port moved. I'm going to do it after my stomach reduction when I am close to or at goal.

I love the idea of getting a little bit of this and that. I just put together a basket for someone who has a loved one in the hospital and wasn't able to be home. It had: fresh fruit-apples, a banana, two pears (all within a few days ready to eat just right), chocolate covered espresso Beans, chocolate covered macadamia nuts, nuts-peanuts/cashews, gummies, a bottled frappachino, two bottles of sports drink, ...this was a big basket.

Music is a great idea if you get the right band. I know Radiohead has a fairly new release that they are touring the U.S. right now to promote.

click multiquote one time, the font changes to green, when ready, click NEW REPLY which is above the reply space at the bottom of the last post, left handside.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

    • BeanitoDiego

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
