Dr. Gerald Kirshenbaum - Considering Dr. Kirshenbaum

Recommended Posts

If you girls want it, eat it. Seriously. Get the cravings out of your head so that you can move on.

I am down 80 pounds and have not deprived myself once.

Eat up and move on!!

I agree with Brandy. I have a little bit of whatever I'm craving so I don't go nuts. Luckily with the band...a little bit usually satisfies me.

I was banded by Dr. Kirshenbaum on 09/26/08. He and his staff were wonderful. The facilities and staff are very professional. I really don't see how he can make money with the price he charges. Also, the surgery center is adjacent to the hospital.

I worry that, if I have even a little, I'll "fall off the wagon" so to speak and start eating lots of easy foods. Sigh.

Can they do it at your gym, like dee did?

Measuring Body Fat....There is only ONE really accurate way of measuring body fat and that is where they dunk you in a tank of Water and it can be expensive. The 2nd best way is the skin fold test where you are measured with Skin Fold calipers. This is pretty accurate but it depends on the skill of the person taking the measurements. I don't recommend you rely on the accuracy of the Body Fat scales. Lots of factors can throw the measurement off to include how hydrated or dehydrated you are, if you are wearing clothes, etc.

Hmmm, well, got the results back from my glucose test.

My fasting levels have actually gone down, so that's a good thing.

But at 1 hour I was at 225 and at 2 hours I was at 165, so impaired glucose tolerance.

I eat SOOOOO carefully with regard to carbs, etc., but I wonder if being on metformin for awhile while I'm continuing to lose weight would be good.

Miss dee, any opinions on this? How high were your sugars when you were on it?

Hey, as a fellow NC'er, I'll go ahead and reply to your question about distance. New Bern and Havelock are far east, near the beach. I'm just outside of Raleigh, which is about 3hrs west of the New Bern/Havelock area, and Shelbi is about 2hrs west of me, if I recall correctly.

So here's a thought! Shelbi - drive east. Munchie - drive west. I won't go anywhere and we can all meet here (in the middle) for an RR date! On November 15th I'll be 10 days post-op and just barely back to work. I'm sure I'd need a night out of the house by that time. But in all seriousness, if you two decide to do some sort of NC get-together let me know.

It would probably have to be Nov 16th because the Marine Corp Ball is on the 15th, and I will have to see if my sister will drive me or let me use her car, but we will try to work something out! :)

FOSHO!!!! That would be wonderful!!!!!!! I want to meet both of you! I am marking my calendar!! Munchk, is your connecting flight in Raleigh?? Raleigh would be great! I didn't know that New Bern even had an airport. It's gotta be pretty small, so I'm thinking you'd have to connect in either Raleigh or Charlotte. We could meet up on your lay over, if you have one. Or, hell, I'll drive wherever. PM your dates and plans when you know details and we'll plan from there. Yay, an East Coast meet up!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so excited!!!!!!!

Yes, believe it or not, New Bern actually does have an airport so that is where I will be flying into. My connecting flight is in Atlanta (and I HATE that airport). I am waiting for my sister to let me know what day she wants me to fly in, but it will be a few days before the 15th for sure, and I will be there at least a few days after that also! It would be awesome if we could meet up!

I'm just giving you a hard time, my dear friend! I'm an old L&D, Peds, newborn nursery (the healthy ones) and postpartum nurse, but have been away for so long I'd be dangerous at this point. I'm spoiled by working at home, but I miss working with other nurses -- never a dull moment! I've been working 3 12's for the last few months, but am switching back to a M-F 8-5 shift next week. I'm going to miss my days off during the week, but I am having a hard time sitting and focusing for 12 hours and I want free evenings again.

That's great that you've already lost from your waist!!!

I love craigslist! Found my den furniture there a few months ago! Re: accumulating stuff -- I am absolutely forcing myself to enter the "getting rid of it" stage of my life. However, I'm married to a collector of anything and everything and my children seem to have inherited that tendency from him. Even Barkley doesn't want to part with his most ragged, gross stuff! I'm surrounded!

Of course Barkley can't part with his most ragged, gross stuff, that is the best kind to doggies!:)

You know Dee, a year ago you'd probably have purchased the whole cheesecake, and not just a slice. Am I right? Is cheesecake not, like, better than sex???? But seriously, way to go buying only one slice. I look forward to the drastic change in my appetite. Why oh why can't I just get banded tomorrow????

I love, love, love the pumpkin cheesecake they have around the holidays. I think it is better than sex!!

Both Dr. K and Tom think that I pulled a stitch out of my port and ripped some muscle away with it. They said it wouldn't be erosion or a slip because I still have good restriction without refluxing or throwing up. So, I think that I will take it easy with the ab work awhile and once it is feeling better, start up slowly again. I haven't been to the gym since Tuesday and the pain is slowly disappearing. The weird thing was that it was in my back as well. I think I will try to go again on Wednesday.

Hubby is good, great actually. He came home early this evening. I am shocked. But better than the hospital. He will do much better at home. Were just taking it easy and trying to keep 4 kids as calm as we can. HA!

Brandy-Good to hear hubby is doing so well. Wish I lived close to you so I could help you with the kids!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
