Dr. Gerald Kirshenbaum - Considering Dr. Kirshenbaum

That is pretty wierd. I very clearly remember Oklahoma City also.

Me too. (well, I was in my thirties, so I should remember!) And they don't really know anything about it. Or the OJ Simpson trial. Or the challenger explosion. OMG. I'm just old.

Guys, here is a really weird thing. My freshmen students were only 11-12 years old on 9/11. While I try not to dwell on it unduly on the anniversary, I always feel compelled to mention it, and then I'm just shocked when I realize how young they were and how confusing and awful it must have been for them. At least as adults we were able to sort through the information we were hearing, use coping skills to deal with the stress (I watched the news incessantly for days . . . I tend to seek information when I'm afraid), discuss it with others, etc. I think many parents tried to shelter their children (understandably) but now they have incomplete/incorrect info and just these shocking, scary memories of a horrible thing happening that they really didn't understand, etc.

It's just weird to think that something that was such a defining moment for the country probably won't be remembered by the students I'll have coming up in the next decade.

I know Mini, isn't that amazing? Sometimes at work, I'm shocked when I talk about things that happened when I was a kid and the younger nurses, have no idea what I'm talking about. Like the other day we were talking about Patty Hearst and the nurse, I was talking with, had no idea who she was.

I have to tell you that of all the memorial sites I've ever been to, the Oklahoma City Memorial is by far the most dramatic! It's amazing!

I remember exactly where I was when the Challenge exploded. I will never forget the day the Wall came down! I cried!

Well, even though I am a "youngster", I must not be that much of one because I remember ALL of that. The other thing that I remember VERY clearly, even though I was only in 1st grade I think, is when John Lennon was shot.

The only time I have ever seen the Oklahoma City Memorial is on the show "Saving Grace" and it did look pretty moving.

Oh, that's so strange. I found myself explaining to my class the other day what "pagers" are. Seriously.

Oh, that was so horrible when John Lennon was shot. My first husband and I had gone out to dinner in a futile attempt to try to get along. After dinner we got in the car and we heard about it on the radio. It was so shocking that we just kind of gave up trying to pretend like we were enjoying ourselves.

My poor son (who has schizophrenia) thinks that John Lennon sends him messages. At least they are good messages.

Mini-So true...there could be much worse people sending him messages. I was devastated about John Lennon even at that young of an age because my whole childhood my parents listened to The Beatles and John Lennon. My dad died when I was two, and he was a huge John Lennon fan. There is a book of poetry by John Lennon floating around my grammys house somewhere. I have been trying to find it without success. I remember finding it when I was younger, and I would really like to look at it now!

When we were in NYC a few years ago we walked through the park to The Dakota and then to strawberry Fields in the park. It was pretty awesome.

I love that there is a band like the Beatles who are able to appeal to so many people across so many generations. I never get tired of them.

I think of The Beatles kind of how I think about dogs...I just don't know how you can't like them, and I am slightly distrustful of people who don't! There has to be ONE of their songs that someone likes! I personally like all the stuff from the drugged out era....go figure!:)

My two all time favorite Beatles songs are "In My Life" and "Blackbird". I think a few weeks ago I wrote about the memorial we had for the friend I grew up with that died last year. He was a huge music fan, and more specifically a HUGE Beatles fan. He was a preschool teacher and taught all his students Beatles songs. Anyway, they had a prominent local musician play at the benefit, and he played "Blackbird". I started crying. I am sappy that way.

Oh, that's awesome. The Beatles litmus test.

How funny that you like the drugged out days. hee hee

One of my students asked me a few months ago if I knew much about the Beatles. I was like, "um, yeah". She asked if I had any of their music on my itunes that she could download. I just cracked up. She had apparently just discovered them.

Come on, I know YOU of all people have to agree with my Beatles litmus test! :)

That is too funny about your student. It is not fathomable to me that someone would NOT know who The Beatles are! Did you let her download any of yours or did you tell her to go the two greatest hits CDs?

Well, you know me all too well. Pretty good litmus test indeed.

I let her download mine. I wanted to make sure she didn't miss the white album, etc.

I was going to say about "blackbird" . . . it came on the ipod the other day and I said to DH that if I were ever to learn to play the guitar, that would be the first song I would learn to play. I love it love it love it. What a beautiful song for your friend's memorial service.

It is beautiful...I almost had some of the lyrics to it added to my tat. I had a different poem added instead. (I think I forgot to tell you guys I had my tat finished last week). I will post a pic when I can get someone to take one! But really, I did consider it for my tat because I think it is so beautiful....

Oh, and BTW, my foot hurts worse than it has in weeks after getting the alcohol injection. So much for it feeling 50% better after the first shot. Sigh.....
