Dr. Gerald Kirshenbaum - Considering Dr. Kirshenbaum

I won't make it tomorrow night gals. The vet's radiologist called and said Buster has pnemonia!!!!!! I have been balling and balling! If he doesn't seem better tomorrow, they want to put him in the hospital. I put him in the bathroom with the vaporizer running. I sat in there with him for the last 2 hours. I can't get him to eat or drink, but he did drink some of my Atkins shake. Do you think that is okay? The vet is closed and I can't find anything else he will drink. So I sent my hubby out for more. I think at least it is something in his system...I am so terrified, Buster is my WORLD!

Munchkin~how is your Bailey doing? I am so sorry to hear about the seizures.

Poor Buster. I'm sure he'll be fine. His mommy will take good care of him. Did the vet give him antibiotics?

As for the Atkins shake, if he can tolerate it it's probably really good for him. The fact that he would drink some of it seems like a good sign. do you have an all night vet where you live, just in case you need to call in the night?

Bless You Mini!

You and your husband have been through a lot with your Son. My heart goes out to parents who have to deal with children who have problems like your Son's. I'm sure it takes a lot of patience and love. I'm also sure you're pushed to your limits many times. He's lucky to have you in his corner. I hope you know how valuable you are to him.

Thank you for sharing your story with us.

Thanks, sweetie. I won't say it's been easy, because it hasn't. But I really do believe in the "that which doesn't kill us makes us stronger" way of thinking about life. I think that my experiences with him have made me such a better teacher and I feel so fortunate to be in a position to really make an impact on others' understanding of mental illness. It's something I talk about in every class (not as weird as it sounds since I teach neuroscience) and I think my students come away with a much better understanding of the problems facing the mentally ill and the importance of research into causes and treatments. I figure it's my "pebble in the water" contribution to the problem. Some of my students are incredibly bright and maybe one day one of them will find the cure.

We've learned over the years to enjoy the times when he's doing well (like now) because it's impossible to predict what will happen tomorrow or next month or next year. It's a cruel disease and people who suffer from it live in the shadows of society.

I couldn't agree with you more Mini..although my children don't have a mental illness, my sweet little girl, Hannah, has gone through 28 surgeries in her short 5 years and were expecting 5-10 more in her future. My son was also diagonosed with dyslexia and a broad based language learning disorder. Between them I could put my head in a wall...but I am SO much stronger (and vocal) then I ever was. Losing weight has even made me better (now I just don't look like the crazy fat lady).

God bless you and your son...it is amazing the different roads that we all travel.

Oh my goodness, your poor little Hannah! May I ask what is wrong? That must be so difficult.

Sure...she had a unilateral cleft lip, a severe bilateral cleft palate. She had a g-tube place at 3 months. She was diagnosed with 2 syndromes Vander Woude and Popliteal Pterygium...which is a miracle in itself that she is here. She has been considered failure to thrive since day 1. Like I said, she is 5, and we still have to hit 30 pounds! We had her 1st surgery at 19 days and we just kept going...

Looking at her on the outside, you would think that she is fine. She just has lots going on internally. She is a strong little cookie, and this has been her life. It is now mine. I vowed that I would get our name out there and if there is any cleft affected famlies that need to talk or anything, we would be there with TONS of information. Something that we did not have.

If you want to see her, you could go to www.cleftadvocate.org click on the photo link, go to "H" and she is Hannah Faith. The info is a little outdated, but you could get a gist of what she looks like. She is lovely!!

She is a dolly! What a brave little girl. My daughter works in a pediatric hospital and sees some of the same little ones over and over and is just amazed by their strength.

It's great that you're willing to help other families. Information makes such a difference.

Being a mom is tough sometimes, yes?

Thanks! She is a sweet thing!

Bless your daughter! We couldn't get through half the stuff it wasn't for the Children's Hospital and the different staff. God bless her!

Being a mom is harder than I ever would have imagined it being! Ever...

Yes, somehow they forget to mention how hard it is in all those parenting guides.

Anita - I've had the same issue with my "fat clothes", but I'm learning to just let go...I haven't gained any weight in a year and I haven't been able to say that for over 10 years! Just count your blessings and bag it up for others who need it because you don't NEED it anymore!

Mal - How horrible! Maybe this is why I have chickens instead of dogs! Poor baby! Pneumonia can knock the socks off a human, I can't imagine what it does to a little pooch! He's probably using all his energy to just breathe! I'll say a little prayer for him - and you - tonight.

It's friggin' snowing again! I'm getting real sick of this place! When is summer going to start? My chicks are getting sickly and I lost 2 more today! Yep, now I'm down to 12 and it looks like I might have 2 more on the death list. CRAP! This cold weather isn't helping them thrive at all! I know that I should expect a couple to die (growing that fast will kill ya, ya know), but for cryin' out loud! I'd like to have at least a COUPLE of chicken dinners out of this! AAAAHHHHH!!!!! It's been a bad day...needed Pepsi and M&M's to make it better. The sun better come out tomorrow or that pack of Hershey bars we have saved for the beach and s'mores is going to disappear!!!!!

Buster could have my Atkins shake if Buster wanted it. He could have my Protein Drink and a chewy cookie and whatever Buster wanted.

The vaporizer was a great idea. Did you get any meds for him? I am hoping so. Mal my Eddie has food allergies. I give him Benydryl just like for adults. That helps. I would just keep Buster hydrated, Water, anything pup wanted to nibble on...even the "goody" from supper...like steak good meat, I would give it to him. He should come around soon.

Steam is good, keep him warm, put a soft blanket in there for him and make sure someone comes by to sit with him and rub his belly or scratch his ears whatever he loves best.

LUCK and get well wishes to Buster.

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
