Dr. Gerald Kirshenbaum - Considering Dr. Kirshenbaum

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am new to this. Doing lots of reading about diff. drs. in diff. states and Mexico. Since I am self-paying, Dr. K looks to be a good choice. Being a newbie, I don't understand about fills, unfills, fluoro, etc. Is there some specific place I can read this info? I agree with some of new posts by new people, these threads are sooooo helpful!

hi Deb:

Below is a Forum JUMP option for this website. Click on it and the box will open. You will see a host of threads already started on pretty much every topic you are curious about.

I suggest having a pen and paper handy or WORD up and copy and paste the things you see that you wanted to learn.

Dr. K is, in my opinion, the BEST. I feel so happy to have gotten the band and to have met so many fantastic people in Denver. Best to you.

Patty

Long post today friends:

I'll start off by sharing a website I found. This one is called calories per hour. www.caloriesperhour.com

Half my battle with being in shape is the ignorance I had about food and eating and STARVING (which isn't in the plan for a good metab. when you read on that website). I recommend these articles:

TIPS:Diet and Weight Loss Tips | CaloriesPerHour.com

Calculator: Calories Burned, BMI, BMR & RMR Calculator | CaloriesPerHour.com

@Marcy- I saw Paula the last time I went to Colorado.

Her price was...I'm thinking $75. I don't really remember...maybe $100...call and ask Natalie. I am sooooo glad I did this. I sometimes think that perhaps we all need a "tune-up" after having the band for awhile.

I can speak honestly and say that my first year was focusing on breaking some food bondage habits I had. I had no idea I was that addicted to food. Geez. Crazy stuff going on in my head when you can't reach for comfort and shove it in your mouth without hacking. I also use to drink my meals..seriously. Big huge glass filled with sweet tea, no less than three at dinner. Yeah. So breaking old habits, getting use to new ones, dealing with the headwork that goes on with such a big change (for me it was).

For anyone experiencing some feelings and emotions that are really challenging, I recommend counseling. Since I had already been to counseling years before, this time I called my insurance and boldly asked for someone to fit my bill...conversation went something like this:

"I'm looking for a counselor"

"Yes, ma'am and what is your zip code?"

"34667"

"Okay, that is Hudson?"

"Yes, but to be honest, I am less concerned about a provider locally than I am about getting the right person. I'd prefer a female, somewhere between 40 and 60 who deals with addiction."

"What type of substance abuse..."

"You know that's rather personal and when I say addiction it's all relative"

I then got the name of a man through our insurance who told me that through my company I had four free visits. That was really an added bonus.

I also recommend Overeaters Anonymous. I joined OA and also joined an online group through YAHOOGroups. Daily helpful things.

...............................................................

Sidann: There is a Liquid Protein 'shot' you can buy online. They ship to your house. The link to this place can be found at Dr. K's website..here they are:

Start: www.lapbandrockies.com

Nutritional supplements: www.lapbandrockiesstore.com

Liquid Proteins.< /span>

I recommend PROFECT liquid Protein four for 10.99.

It's about 2.35 cents a meal. Not bad considering how many  AMPS  of protein you get with one meal.

The flavors are great and I mix them with Propel strawberry Kiwi for a punch flavor. I have started drinking this for Breakfast. Always always at room temperature. I have more than once swallowed a cold item and gotten very constricted.

I meet my personal trainer to go over goals this week Tuesday. Can I say a goal is to just show-up?

(you all know how much I hate exercising but this is a must and I know it is a must) Creating another new habit! We have done BMI, BMR and RMR. This week starts the photos, the tour, the basics and first goals.

ROCKIN THE GYM BABY!:sneaky:`:w00t:' I want that hot body, I want tight jeans and thigh high black leather boots and a plunging neckline with a set of 'girls' that whistle Dixie.:leaving:bikerboobs.jpg

Welcome, Deb! I'm new too and will also be traveling from out of state to have surgery with Dr. K. And, yes, this forum is the best.

I drank the Isopure from GNC, I can't say that they were my favorite, but I did it. Then I moved onto Atkins Advantage, they are soooo yummy. I still try to have one Atkins in the morning and one after dinner. I tried some of the other Protein Shakes, just didn't like the others. Everyone has their own favs, you will find yours too!

Lap~Thanks for the info...you are always great with passing on great information! Good luck with the trainer, good for you. I know you will be telling us how much you enjoy working out!

Lapdancer, thanks for your reply, but no forum jump showed up here; it took me to a space that "unscribed" me...not so good. Maybe you could just write out the address for me?

I sent my first communication to Dr. K's office; hopefully, I will hear soon. This is all very scary for me at my age...57...as the OHSU personnel made it sound as if one is over 50 it is questionable to be approved for surgery. Has anyone else had that experience?

Thanks sooo much for responding.

Great input on the Protein Drinks - I'm going to keep trying until I find one. The antibiotic regemin (sp) (yogurt, anti-nausea meds, etc.) has worked pretty well today. All in all I'm doing great and very pleased with everything. Dr. K and all others in the office were super plus those in the surgery center in Parker were great. I couldn't have asked for more. Dee, Lap, Mal, Shellie and others have given me support this weekend when I had questions and helped me over the few problems I wondered about. Mini and Deb I traveled from out of state for surgery and everything went just fine. You've made the right choice in surgeon and lap band thread! I love the picture from RR - I wish I lived closer to participate some time. I'll be back to CO on July 12 for a fill. I would rather come back to Dr. K with an airplane ticket price than pay the same $$ with a stranger.

Hi Deb. I haven't ever heard that, but there is a whole thread for people over 50 who have had surgery . . . you should ask them. Maybe it's harder to get insurance to cover it????

I wish you lived closer too! I'd share my protein bullets with you so you could taste them. Woofay was so sweet to share with me.

Protein drinks are so individual. Some are just yucky to some people, while others love them. My friend bought a huge bag of powdered protein mix from Cost Co. She shared some with me and I almost barfed! She loves it! I can't imagine drinking it! YUCK!

I have heard others say the same about the drinks that I prefer.

I don't do protein drinks often. I know I have to co-exist in this world with real food, so it's time for me to learn how to moderate myself and live in the real world. I fear if I lived on protein drinks just to get to my goal weight, once there, I'd gain weight if I started eating real food again. If I can get my protein in with solids, I'm happy and I lose better.

You'll find it's a huge debate on some Obesity WLS sites. I insist that people do what works for them. It's your life and you have to find the best way for you to live with your band, lose weight and be healthy.

Just my 2 cents -- for free!

dee~

Ok, I see that picture and I think about how high the sides are on that outfit and that it would never work for me because I have a panus...that great roll of skin that hangs down on my abdomen. It would look just awful, but then if I look awful enough the insurance people will PAY me to go get surgery, eh?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
