Dr. Gerald Kirshenbaum - Considering Dr. Kirshenbaum

Recommended Posts

I have such trouble dealing with head hunger. I think my hunger the last week or so has been because I bumped up my workout, and my body is craving energy AND I think I need to account for my Water intake.???

Just try to stay busy, busy, busy! Follow the band rules. That's about all I can offer. It is a huge challange for me!

I can't get in until the 29th , better than the 7th, but still a ways away.

So let me ask you all this...how do you deal with head hunger in the mean time. This week has been super hard!!!!

That is so funny, Mal!

I just thought that about myself! Just this moment as I had to scroll from page 207 to 208 and the majority of 207 was ME!

Sorry Dudes!

Well, I did it! I started on this site yesterday and today I scheduled my surgery with Dr. K. I'm saving $10,000:thumbup: Yeah!!!!! The hospital here at home was charging me $20,000 for self-pay. I am soo nervous about flying to Denver for my surgery. Can anyone give me some advice about this Doctor and having surgery away from home? What about follow-up visits? Do you get fills at home? I hope I made the right decision. How long did you stay in Denver?

My surgery is Feb. 13 which is the day my (late) husband and I had our first date. It would have been 21 years. I can't believe we would have been married 20 years in May. Since I am new, here's my scoop. My husband died of pancreatic cancer on June 1, 2005. He was only 46. I have three children at home: 17, 14 and 3. My mom just died in July and I have had a hard time lately. My mom's death brought up painful memories of my husbands death. I don't have a lot of people to talk to about this and that's why I am glad for this site. My kids are afraid of losing another parent so that is why I am ready for a change PLUS at 45 years old, I need to be healthier for my little one. Sorry so long!

Fatwidow~ Welcome to the board! (i like your screen name!) It sounds like you have really been through a lot. What state are you coming from for your surgery? I can't give you any advise about the traveling, cuz I'm just down here in the Springs. But there are plenty that do! What I can tell you is what a great Doc you've chosen. I truly couldn't be any happier with him. He listens to his patients. He's also very skilled. I feel very fortunate to have found him...and I did so on this board too! Congrats on your date! Are you feaky excited???!!!!

Oh, ya! I had to add....... I had some meat tonight!!! Woo hoo! I had a small part of a hamburger patty (not the whole thing, don't wanna push it!) and I also had some broccoli!!!! Yay veggies! And so far, so good! Its gonna stay! And I am still full...truly full. Yay me! hahaha! And, since it all stayed where its supposed to...I'll be full the rest of the night! (Hopefully!?:seeya:) How can .15cc do this? I saw the syringe...it was almost nothing. Oh well!

Just had to share! Have a great night!

Welcome Fatwidow!!!! Before long you will have to change your screen name to skinny widow .

I traveled from Phoenix, Az to have my surgery with Dr. K. I drove, which was not very smart, but I am afraid to fly. I will suggest that you schedule your return flight for the 2nd day after surgery, not the next day, because you will feel 1000% better the second day than you did the first. At least that was the case for me.

As far as Dr. K is concerned, you are in EXCELLENT hands! He and his staff are amazing! I can tell you that in my 38 years of living, (hope to have 38 more) I have never met a group of more caring individuals.

If you have any other questions about Dr. K, you can also PM me. I don't post much because I work 60 hours a week and I am also in college full-time, 6 days a week, taking 18 credit hours this semester. So, I barely have time to breath. Hopefully it will slow down for me in the summer-time.

Woofay...

With my .2cc unfill, it was amazing the difference! The band (even a 10cc one) is sensitive..... Glad you're feeling better!

Ok, so I just have to share this. For the first time ever I am thrilled to say that I have nothing to wear (well ok almost nothing). I cleaned out my closet and all my drawers and got rid of all the clothes that were too big. Goodwill is getting three HUGE bags of "fat clothes" I a going to take them first thing in the morning so I don't chicken out and keep them "just in case" I am now more than a third of the way to my goal weight.:seeya:

Welcome to all the newbies, you have joined a great community of lovely and caring ladies (and 1 guy)

Fat Widow,

Hi. Mona is right. Don't fly back the morning after surgery. Wait until late the next day or on the 2nd day after surgery. I flew out the day after surgery and I didn't think I was going to make it. Of course I did, but it was touch and go . The 2nd day after surgery I was much better. I would advise you to make sure your hotel room and your home has a recliner. You will need it for sleeping the first 4 or 5 nights. Go to Denver a few days early if you can. I had a great time traveling around the Manitou Springs/Pikes Peak area. I considered it a true vacation, instead of traveling for surgery. I had a fabulous time in the area.

fatwidow - Welcome! I've been off the board for a few days...lots going on! I had my surgery in July...had to fly from Nome, Alaska. I brought my sister and had an EXCELLENT surgery and recovery (and I've had abdominal surgery before - lap cholecystectomy and 3 c-sections...this was by far the best one!) I flew in on Mon. and had my pre-op appointment, surgery Tues. morning, and after walking through Target and every Dollar Store we could find (good excersize and we don't have those in Alaska so it was fun) I flew home Thurs. evening - very comfortably! I was eating "normal" within three weeks...you're body lets you know what you can and can't eat. Fills are difficult for me since I have to travel to Anchorage ($$$) to get them. Make sure you have your aftercare set up first. The phone "interviews" with the nutritionist and Dr. K are just as good as being in the office. Dr. K also saw me the day I left, but that was my call, not his...I just wanted to "be sure" before I left town. The surgery, trip, hassle for it all was worth it! Good luck!

Everyone - Oh my...spent SEVERAL hours grinding moose meat today...finally getting around to it (it's been -20 out, who wants to butcher in that kind of cold? at least the meat froze and didn't rot! Haha) Andrew then told me that we'd only got 1/2 way through ONE leg! Maybe a rib or two too! YIKES! I'm pooped!

My friends daughter has aortic stenosis and is requiring surgery - again. I'm working on a speghetti feed for next week. My son's birthday is tomorrow and I've been coloring balloons to make them look like pokeballs, I've made and painted a pinata that looks like a pokeball, and I've colored little pokemon to decorate the house with...did I mention I'm pooped? Well, I'm also in charge of the biggest fund raiser for the year for our preschool...how did I get roped into this? It's just crazy!

I've still been working out 3 times a week at a class which is helping with the stress. I've done something I've never done before with an ab excersize so that was motivating! I do some major moving at home...I'm not lazy at all. However, I've found myself drinking a soda (NOT diet) once a day and that's not going to help anything!

I've finally lost a pound! Not that it is a big deal or anything, but it's that pound that takes me off of my plateau weight...haven't been this low for YEARS! Feels good! My boobs/cleavage looks awesome today!

We're having a blizzard warning right now...maybe more snow?! Big deal...the shoveling keeps me active and it's at least ABOVE zero now so I can handle it!

'night all!

Hello Ms. Widow... I wanted to pop in and say hello, sorry I never got back to you on your last post! First off, welcome and I wish you success and good health on your journey! Good for you to take care of yourself!

I am the person in colorado who went to Dr. Snyder, not Dr. K. (I met these cool folks in this thread at a dinner they have once a month, and they were nice enough to welcome me in to the fold). I was a self pay and did not know of Dr. K prior to my surgery date. I paid about 16,500

for my surgery all told.. SO Dr. K's price is better and his patients seem to really love him! Also, his fills are soo much cheaper than Dr. Snyders.. I pay $100 a fill, where as Dr K's are $15, (I think that is right!).

I am not sure on how to do the surgery while traveling thing, as I was here in colorado. Maybe others with that same expericence on this thread can share. Have you checked in your area for a fill clinic? and what that costs where you live? I don't think flying in for fills would be really practical?

At any rate, good luck and good for you!

Take Care!

Lyd

Welcome Fatwidow~ Sorry about your husband and mom, that would really be tough. I am glad to hear that your taking this step to get healthy. I will agree with everyone, that your in excellent hands.

Mal~ I am trying, I will be hitting the gym, hopefully 6 days this week. The only thing that is truly grossing me out, is when I do sit ups, my port is wiggling all over! UGH! Has this happened to you?

Tied~ My appt. is at 10:30, so I will make sure that he is in a great mood for YOUR BIG DAY!!! YAY!!!

Marcy~ God bless you girl!! I don't think that I could handle AK. I am chilly enough here in Colorado. Keep up with all the activities, I wish that I had some more to do here.

Book~ AWESOME about your clothes. I am getting there, but just trying to hang on until Spring. Then I can get rid of all the winter clothes for good. Keep up the great work.

Mona~ How are you handling everything. You have a huge load with school and work. Are you a stress eater like me? Maybe this is why were in bandster hell...

Happy Saturday Everyone!!

Brandy

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
