Sad news :scared2: I think I will have to postpone my surgery to a later date because Dr K recommended I see my GP about a possible abdominal hernia  I've booked my flight and room (holiday inn -- thanks for the recommendations) so it all hinges on my GP clearing me on Tuesday or hauling butt through some testing so I can stay with the 10th. On top of losing my date I have the worry that something is in disarray in my belly.

I had my consult with the nutritionist Paula Peirce and that went really well. I'm so happy with all of the interaction with his staff.

I guess a little patience for safety cant be bad.

Hello Dr K people!

Im happy to say that I'm scheduled for June 10 to be banded by Dr k! Yay! My telephone consult was the clincher for me. He really knows his stuff and was very friendly.

So Im seeking your advice on where to stay for my visit. The list that his office sent me is mostly immediate area budget minded places and Im really looking to stay somewhere nice with some sort of "heavenly super sleeper" type bed. I'll be staying from tuesday through sunday so I also hope to get around the area and have a little post op fun. Were a couple of 30 something mallrats so it seems the place to stay is the DTC area?

I had my surgery on April 17 and stayed at the Marriott Denver South At Park Meadows. Very nice plush beds and close to the Park Meadows Mall which I love to shop at. Good luck with your surgery. By the way I went and got my hotel on priceline.com the room was supposed to be a 200$ a night room and I got it for 50$ a night. Again good luck.

Hi friend. You had me at the telephone consult. I felt the same when I hung up. I knew I had made the right choice. I am coming to Denver on the 9th and would love to come to Parker and see you off into the Band Land of Wonder.

It really is amazing how far a few good phone calls can go to boost your confidence! My dad had his surgery with Dr Soong in Las Vegas and while Im certain that he's a great surgeon his staff is a bunch of (Edited rant: decided this is not the right place for a bunch of disparaging comments about a surgeons office)

Lets just say that not every office is as nice as Dr K.

Thank you for the sendoff.. I hope I dont get my date postponed :scared2:

It seems Dr. Kirshenbaum has a big following on this forum. I think from what I have read I will be putting him at the top of the list for Surgeons. I have a few questions:

1. How many Lap-Bands has he done?

2. If I fly and have it done and then go back home, whats the average cost for a different doc to do the fills?

1. How many Lap-Bands has he done?

I am not sure of how many, but I am sure someone on here knows. He's done thousands of lap procedures though.

2. If I fly and have it done and then go back home, whats the average cost for a different doc to do the fills?

The fills here are $250 for the fluoroscope and $100 for the regular fills. It would actually be cheaper to fly out to Denver than get a fill here.

My Goodness! That is sad news! I am sorry to hear that! BUT let's be hopeful and believe that your GP will find things are not so bad and you'll be on your way here for your Band! Let us know what you find out.

Count me in for Red Robin on the 10th.

Goodie! Yippie! Wow! I am doing the Happy Dance! :):rolleyes2::mad:

I'm not sure how many Bands Dr K has done, but you can get the exact number from Natalie. He is a very skilled surgeon and an expert in Lap procedures.

The best thing to do before booking your surgery is to find a doctor in your area who will do your fills. Make sure you have someone set up before having your surgery. Some docs aren't interested in doing fills on other doctors' patients. Some fills can be very very expensive and others are not. Dr. K charges $15.00 for each fill. Some people find it cheaper to just fly here.

and I feel the same.

and add my name to the list because I will be flying in June 9th. I am in the early stages of making plans for several weeks out west. My summer is coming fast, not fast enough. I would get on a plane west the last day out but my family might wonder why so fast. BUT I will be there.

Colorado friends, the Travel Channel says leasing a car is cheaper than renting for two weeks. any tips on places to lease a vehicle for 3 weeks? Let me know!

Thanks.

Patty

I am just thrilled! I can't answer the question about the car leasing. Sorry! I always rent from Alamo or Budget. I rented a Prius while in NY and loved it!

Hey Dr. K bandsters! I had my surgery with Dr. K on Thursday and I arrived back in Atlanta last night. Dr. K was wonderful and so was his staff and everyone at Parker Adventist hospital. I stayed at the Holiday Inn Select and was really impressed. The bed was super comfortable and everything was so upscale. Make sure you get a suite so you'll have a refrigerator. We went sightseeing in the mountains the day before surgery. I didn't feel like doing anything like that after surgery. The flight home was kinda rough. I was in pain and we went through some tough storms that were very bumpy. I'm just glad to be home. I'm feeling much better today. I'm so glad I made Dr. K my choice. I'm coming back to Denver for my first fill but will probably switch to a local Atlanta doctor after that. Anyway, if you are considering Dr. K, do so without hesitation. He's great!

Susie

Congrats Susie! Welcome to the Loser's Bench!!!

I just wanted to add that the phone consult I had with Dr. K was the clincher for me too. I felt like he understood what I am feeling and really knew his stuff. He was very candid and personable.

It has been 6 1/2 months and I have't regretted my desicion a single day! I don't know when I will make it back to see Dr. K and his staff. It has been over a month and I can't imagine needing a fill anytime soon, but I look forward to it when I do have to make the long trip out there. It have been worth every minute I have put into this journey and every dollar!

Julie.ann, you've done so well with your band in such a short period of time! Congrats!

Hey! Put me down for 3lbs lost!

Thanks!

I think it's much more, but it's TOM and other issues. I'm hoping to hit a high number next Monday on our final weigh in.

I'm returning to Denver in 4 weeks for my first fill. Dr. K said it would be in my best interest to get my first fill from him. The doctors here in Atlanta fill you very slowly and Dr. K tries to get you to restriction quickly. Sounds good to me! Anyway, does anyone know of a hotel that's within walking distance of his office? I was thinking I could take a shuttle to the hotel and save on the rental car. Dr. K does want me to stay overnight after the fill to be sure I'm not too tight. Thanks.

Many out of towners will fly in and get their fill, then they fly out. Few stay overnight, but I don't think it's something he requires. You can always email Natalie to check and see what he suggests. I don't think there is a hotel near his office. His office is in an odd place. Maybe you could take a taxi from the hotel to his office. I'm not sure what a taxi would cost. I know sometimes the price of a taxi for one ride is the same as the price of a one day rental car.

I have always wondered why some doc are so slow with their fills. Perhaps, they feel it's safer or maybe it's a way for them to make some money off their patients. I am not sure. I'm not saying this about every surgeron who does small fills, but I have a friend who's doc only gives .5 ml each fill. He does a fill a month. Can you imagine how long it would take to get good restriction?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
