Dr. Gerald Kirshenbaum - Considering Dr. Kirshenbaum

Have you noticed there are two different PB's? When I got stuck the other evening on zucchini, (this is really gross) I burped and a huge amount of thick mucous came up. I never had a pain, but a slight discomfort feeling. But I could have ignored it easily because it wasn't bad. After I burped and PB'd, I felt fine. Then about 5 mins later the same thing happened.

Then previously on Broccoli, I've gotten stuck and the pain for extremely bad. I have burped loudly and the broccoli came out with no excess mucous. With the zucchini, it never came up.

Sorry that is pretty gross, but I was wondering if these PB's are similar to others. I had no idea there were two different kinds.

I didn't get stuck until 11 months out, so I'm still learning these things.

The few times I have PB'ed (new verb) from eating too quickly, sometimes the food will come up, but always there is extreme slime. It is truly gross. And it takes a while to get over that feeling. At the end, that is pretty much it for eating for me.

Well, I got my fill yesterday. I arrived in Denver at 9am and the supershuttle took me to the medical center. So I had a LOT of time to kill before my 2:15 appointment. I went to the cafeteria and watched dvds for a couple hours, and then went to wait in Dr.Ks office for another hour or so. Then Dr.K came in and offered to do my fill early since he was there and I was there. He started by putting in .5. I thought, I can be this tight, it would be good to have strong restriction. Well that thought lasted until he made me drink down to the line. I almost puked on him! But it went down eventully. He took out .2 and it was still kinda tight. So we settled on .2, and it has been great. I got dinner at the airport because my flight got delayed. You know those KFC chicken snacker sandwiches? I ate one and was SO full! As opposed to the 4 piecesof pizza I pigged out on the night before. YAY! Restriction! I think this will really help me get going again.

Oh, a story about my flight. Besides being delayed, we did not leave until 7:15 (instead of 6). When I filnally got on the plane no one was sitting next to me, until the last two guys got on the plane. I was in an isle seat so I got up and let them in. The first thing one of the guys said was, "Think I have enough time to pee before we take off?" I told him no because we were already too delayed. Then he started hitting on me, which was not flattering because he was obviously drunk. Then he started talking to his friend and was swearing up a storm. I was just sitting there thinking that this was going to be the worst flight ever. Well, I dont know if angels wear green, but an airport employee came and escorted them off the plane! YAY!!! So I had a VERY comfortable flight home, and even got some sleep. I am glad that airports and airlines are so strict about things like that.

I'm going to Disneyland on Wednesday. This will be my first Disney experience, besides visits to the Disney Store. I'm hoping I fit on all the rides. Wish me luck.

how's the fill going? Sounds like you guys did the right thing! It would be bad to be too tight when you have to return home by an airplane! I remember one lady on here when I was first banded. She got a fill, got on the plane and started being unable to swallow her saliva. By the time she landed, she had to be taken directly to the ER for a slight unfill. I'm glad you guys took some out before you left Dr K's office.

I have great news! I am in NY taking my daughter to college. Anyway, I flew here without needing a seat belt extender! Can you believe that? AND I fit into one seat. I was so afraid I wouldn't fit well and I'd have to take up another's seat, that I purchased two tickets for my flight home (my flight over, I was with my daughter and she doesn't mind giving me part of her seat) -- now I have two tickets and I don't need the extra space! Body distortion! I still feel so much fatter than I am!

How are things with your Dad?

Oh! Have a great time! I love Disneyland! I grew up just miles from there! Every night we could see Tinklerbell flying around the Matterhorn (sp?) Mountain. It was so cute! I loved living there! You'll have a great time! How's Bandster Hell going? That's the period between banding and getting your first fill.

Congratz on not needing an extender!! I bet it is a nice ego boost! The fill is going ok, still testing the waters. My Dad is doing alright. My family is moving next door to my Brother and his family, so that he can help when things get harder.

It's alright. I'm eating lots of Protein and fruits and veggies. Being very good. I'm not hungry because of all the protein. I'm at a stand-still with the weight loss, but I know this is temporary. Looking forward to my fill.

So.... I have a question. The first couple of days after my fill were great. But the last few have been weird. I can't really eat anything with more consistency than Soup or I hurt. Not like a stuck kind of hurt, but actual pain in chest, jaw, and headaches. Am I just at the stage where I actually have real restriction and just need to wait for my body to adjust? I have made the unfortunate discovery that potato chips go down nice and easy though. We had company last night and I had some. I have decided that I am just going to do shakes and Soups until I adjust. No chips. That leads down a bad road.

Well I deviated from my guidelines for the past two days and I gained 2 lbs because of it. I hope most is Water retention. Back on the wagon. I haven't cheated two days in a row since being banded almost 6 months ago. Easter didn't help that! All that is over now.

Put me down for a two pound loss. Sucks because I was going to pull a big number this week. I am out of town for the rest of the week. I'll be at a conference at the beach. It scares me a little, but they have a nice gym and I'm not going to let myself go to the beach and lay in the sun Wed-Friday until I have worked in the gym!

Eating might be tough because it is usually buffet and fattening deep fried foods or Breakfast of biscuts and gravey, but I know if I want it bad enough I will find something to eat that fits into my guidelines.

Take care this week!

You can put me down for -1.2

Lotza', sounds like staying on liquids for a few days might be a good idea. Sorry everything hurts . . .

Miss Dee, way to go on the NSV! Are you back yet?

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
